| Hawaii Flight.....with my yorkie.... Hello all. I'm not sure how many out there have had this similar situation, but I thought I would check here first. Come September I plan on moving to Hawaii, for approximately 2 years. As a mother would not leave her baby I am not leaving my Uno on the mainland. There are many regulations for flying dogs to Hawaii, as it is a rabies free state and there are quarantine rules, lots of paper work, etc. I will do anything it takes, however my problem is..... Dogs cannot fly in the cabin to Hawaii. Anywhere else, sure. Hawaii? Nope. I have checked all airlines... The only option would be flying him as cargo My stomach turns when I think of this. I cannot imagine my baby in a dark crowded area with tons of luggage and risking something bad happening to him. I have seen stories on the news here and there about pets dying during transit, and I'm in a real predicament. Also, i've opened my suitcase before and my stuff is all jumbled in there...so...what would happen to a pup in a cage?! Has anyone out there flown their baby to Hawaii as cargo? If not, can anyone please share with me their stories if they have flown their dog as cargo, not in the cabin? Good or bad....I want to hear it all. I'm completely stressed over this situation. It is a lengthy process to get a pet over there so I need to start soon....but I'm scared. My friend has flown her dog as cargo twice and it seemed to go ok....but who knows what the dog went through...Someone help. |

| I'm a military spouse and I have flown with a pet (21 pounder) from Europe back home stateside. The vet gave a tranquilizer for the long flight, he went under the plane as the same rules apply on trans-Atlantic flights as Hawaiian flights. He was fine upon arrival, no issues or noticeable problems with his flight in the belly of the plane. I too worried about the stories I had heard of dogs passing away due to being left underneath the plane in the summer for too long. The airlines assured me if there were any unexpected layovers or plane issues the pet would be brought off for safety. They also told me that pets could not fly in the extreme summer though. So if you are flying july/august time frame I would suggest maybe leaving baby with someone until the weather cools, or going earlier? Anyway, I hope this helps in some small measure...Good luck!!

| Uno Baby, I have friends that have flown their dogs in cargo to and from Hawaii with no problems to the west coast. That is about 5 hrs flight time plus a bit for loading and unloading. I'm attaching a link to the Hawaii quarantine rules in case you don't already have it. The rabies shots done and documented at the right time before arriving is essential, plus the blood testing, so make sure you are on top of it now with a vet who will document properly, so you can qualify for the 5 day quarantine. Otherwise, you could end up here and have your dog go into quarantine for 120 days. Animal Quarantine Information — Hawaii Department of Agriculture

| I have researched cruise ships and unless it is a legitimate service dog (not emotional support) they are not allowed. This is mainly because of the quarantine laws of other countries and areas that they travel to. MauiGirl that makes me feel better. I currently live in Minnesota so it is approximately 13 hours to Honolulu. I'm visiting July 1-12 without my pooch, non stop flight. I would definitely want to stop in CA and hopefully break up the time period Uno would have to be in his kennel. My aim is to do that 5-day quarantine (although I think there can be direct release at the airport if all paperwork is done properly? Some lady with a yellow lab mentioned that anyway) Baroness, thanks for the heads up. I had read that the temperature is not necessarily controlled so that would definitely be something to consider. That's why I had picked September as my aim, but we'll see. Thanks for the feedback. |
