Question for breeders The popularity of yorkies is overwelming now. It seems like everyone wants a yorkie now. It is the most popular breed of toy dogs. So, the waiting list is long everywhere you go. So, how do you choose who gets the puppy? Whoever shows up first and gives you money first? Or do you make sure it is going to be going to a really good home? Let me explain why I am asking. We found out this man who lives in the next town over to us, his yorkie is due Nov 22nd. And he is selling the puppies for only $500. So, my mom and I are really excited and want to possibly get a puppy from him more than anything. The only thing is that by the time we found out about the man, there are plenty of people already on the list. And we are towards the bottom. So, with only 3 or 4 puppies being produced. Our chances are slim to none, right? My mom is willing to drive to his home as soon as the puppies are born. Maybe if we give him a deposit, he will hold our puppy until it is old enough to go home. I am so worried that with so many people being on the list and so few puppies, that we don't stand a chance. My mom told him how we owned a yorkie for 13 years and how she died this June. We are not trying to make him feel sorry for us. But, he will know that we do have experience with raising a yorkie and can provide a really good home. He can even check our home if he likes and we can give him vet references. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to get one of his puppies. The parents are small. Only about 3 and half pounds. So, I know there won't be many in the litter.

For myself , I take time to screen the new potential owners . If they are not pleased with this procedure , they just have to return to their homes empty handed . I always keep my puppies until they are spayed or neutered .

As I read your message, some red flags popped up. The last sentence about the size of his female would lead me to think he is an irresponsible breeder..And, have y'all researched so that you know the questions you need to ask the breeder AND the questions that the breeder should be asking you.. The price is great, but I would be worried about the heartbreak that money might buy. Just my opinion and I know that others will have differing ones so you will have to choose the things that you are concerned about..

This is his second litter. His dogs are registered with the AKC kennel club. We will meet the parents and pups at his home. My mom knows exactly what questions to ask. She is not going to just fork over the money if she feels that we are just getting screwed over. And he can screen us if he likes. He can take a tour of our home. He can call our vet. I know he will give us a good reference. We took excellent care of our yorkie Lacey.

Sorry if I may sound rude but buying a Yorkie from a breeder that won't ask any questions about is the same as buying from petstores or puppymills . This person just have one interest in breeding and it is $$$$$$ and no matter if the price is lower or higher . 3 pounds is way much too small for having puppies .

My cricket is 5 lbs and I took her to her vet to see if she would be large enough to have pups one day. He examined her and gave the thumbs up. He says with dogs smaller than her and even some larger, have to get c-sections if the pups are too big to deliver vaginally. Tiny puppies are also at risk of getting sick more than the standard pups he says. I would have to breed her with a stud 3-5 lbs he recomended. I can't imagine a 3 lb girl giving birth, unless the pups are really tiny?? Well as long as they are all ( including Momma) healthy.

I think maybe he underestimated their weight. We will check the parents and pups out before we fork over any money. My mom knows exactly what to look for and what questions to ask. My yorkie Lacey only weighed 4 pounds and our vet recommened NOT to breed her. So, we got her spayed at 6 months old.

I have screened the person getting our two girl pups (and called her vet). I plan to do the same for anyone interested in the boys. I'm not letting them go to just anybody that comes up w/ the money...I will keep them all before I do that! That is one reason why we are asking 700-800 for our boys...I am afraid that if we ask too little...there is no telling what kind of home they will go to. (Of course, that situation would be different if it was someone I know or someone our vet sends our way...she is a long-time family friend and I trust her judgment.) Also, I think if you are informed on the breed, you will be able to spot prospective buyers that are also informed on the breed by the questions they ask.

Well, I know we can't afford $1000 for a puppy. My mom said she can't really afford to go over $650. Which is extremly tough to find when you want a female. But, whoever decides to sell us a yorkie within our price range, we will know that they are not just after the money. The yorkie will be going into a wonderful loving home environment. My mom does not work, so she is home most of time. Except when she has to run errands. So, the dog will be getting lots of love and attention. Our vet is only 5 minutes away and we took Lacey there for 13 years. So, he can give us a good reference. Lacey was very well taken of. Up to date on all shots all the time. Rarely got sick and we always brought her in right away if we felt something was not right. She got her heartworm treatments once a month. She was groomed regularly. Was very clean, did not have fleas. Lacey had nothing but love and attention. I know I have a ton of references that could back us up. If this man does not work out, we have 1 other person in mind. She was Lacey's groomer and owns a shop near us. She is breeding her yorkies right now. And will be selling her females for $650. We have not heard anything since a month ago. Because she had to have gall bladder surgery and a hysterectomy recently. So, we don't feel right asking if her dog actually got pregnant right now. Because we are just concerned about her getting well. And feel it would be rude to feel like we are only concerned about the puppies and not her. I want to send her a Get Well card to her shop.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would keep in touch with the breeder and let him see how devoted you are to getting a puppy. I will keep you in my prayers as I know how much you miss Lacey and how much love you have to give a new one! Keep us posted! |

Go to a local vet office and ask for a list of breeders..that is how I found my yorkie breeders. I waited (or waiting) over 6 months for my little girl b/c I wanted to find just the right breeder and yorkie that would make a good sibling for our Bailey.

| To me.. buying yorkies is not like... buying clothes at store.. It takes much more time and consideration.. a lot of research. I have been looking for a yorkie for a couple months now and I have made a goal for Feb or March. It is like adopting a child. I don't want to jump to something because of price or their appearance.. Plus if I have a couple more months, I can save some money.. every month.. so that if the pup is more expensive than my original budget, I could afford. A lot to learn.. about breeders.. and.. just getting a new pup even you might have experience.
