| I am so mad As most of you know I have been in the process of moving and that is why I have not been on here for awhile. The move is done and the new house is all set up, Thank God, I thought I was going to lose it there. I told you all about Sadie being in heat and how I was keeping Scooter and her in different areas of the house, walking at different times, outside at different times and so on. The day of the move I trusted a family member to keep them for me until we got in the new house, one day, thats all I left them for and now I fear Sadie may be pregnant. I am so upset that I could hurt this family member. How is it possible that I managed to keep them apart for 4 weeks and they could not do it for one day after they told me they could. I wonder if this was not done on purpose because this family member always talks about how she would love to have a small dog like Sadie or Scooter and maybe she thought I would give her one of the puppies, isnt that awful that I am thinking this way? I feel like such a bad Mommy. What do I do now? I am so lost at this whole thing. Why did she have to go in heat right before her spay appointment? I am just at a total loss here. Please someone help me figure out what to do. I fear to have her fixed now because I heard that is dangerous and I fear for her to have any puppies because she is so young so what do I do? How do I know if she is pregnant? someone help me please. |

| Hopefully one of the breeders on here will see this. Maybe you could also post in the breeders section. Maybe one of your options would be to discuss this with your vet.

| I don't know that I would want to know if she was pregnant and I would go ahead with my plans to spay her; but would definitely seek the advice of my vet as to when to do this. I would not put my pup at risk either way.

| I would make an appointment with a trusted vet (get recomendations if you are in a new town) and see what your options are. P.S. Talk to the family member..clear the air ... don't let this become an issue between you all

| Go ahead and have her spayed as soon as she is out of heat. It is only considered "higher risk" if the pregnancy is well advanced. It's not any riskier than a normal spay to go ahead and do it now. Good luck, Teresa |

| I spayed my Rhodesian Ridgeback while she was pregnant, vet said we had about 13 puppies. Hurt my heart, but knew it was the right decision to make. RR and Rottie puppies, couldn't be sold, would have to be given away, and I knew in my heart that no good would come to giving a large breed dog away, so much dog fighting goes on in our area. My female went into heat 4 MONTHS early, after we got our Rottie Kahn, and he was only 5 months old when he got her. Strange things do happen!!! I would have her spayed asap! JMO though. Good luck!!

| You have to follow your heart and conscience of what to do. I just wanted to let you know you can spay her and its not high risk. If you decide to have the pups you need to find a mentor and do lots of research. Best wishes

| I am not in a new town and I have the same vet that I have had for 18 years, I use to take my Sophie and my Black Lab buddy there, she actually spayed and neutered them. She is the one that told me it is high risk to do the spay if she is pregnant. I just am so lost but I will talk to her again tomorrow and ask more questions. As far as the family member goes, I am trying very hard to forgive what she has done. She says she is so sorry but then in the next breath says to me can you just imagine how cute Scooter and Sadie's puppies will be and then I lash out and say to her,,,,,,Scooter and Sadie are just puppies themselves they do not need to have puppies and all she can say is I am sorry but the damage is done. I just do not understand her thinking. She is 34 years old and is acting like a child. |

| I am so sorry that you are going through this. I would go ahead with the spay if it was me. It's a personal decision though. Raising puppies is not easy. I've never raised Yorkie's but my hubby has beagles. Idk how many times I've been up all night helping with delivery, bottle feeding, and checking on babies. Plus, your female is young and that is dangerous for her. I'm sorry, I wish the best for you and your little girl.

| Hopefully, a breeder will chime in, but according to my knowledge you CAN do an emergency spay even if they are pregnant. I'm not sure if it is higher risk or not though. However, even if it is higher risk you have to weigh it against the risk of pregnancy and having pups... that is not smooth sailing either. I hope others have more advice for you. I'm sorry your family member was so irresponsible and I know you must be furious. I know you did your best to keep your baby safe. It is hard not to be mad at someone for jeopardizing all that, perhaps even for their own personal gain. I don't blame you for snapping at them and being angry. I would be too. Good luck, I will be saying prayers for you and your baby! |

| 1) you can spay up to full term. It can be done; I wouldn't recommend and most vets won't do it. Not for fear for your dog but because many do not believe in aborting so close. 2) I am assuming she is between 6-12 old? I would actually recommend spaying her; but it also depends on her weight. If she is under 4lbs she is wayyy to small to have safe puppies. And she will not be standard it is safer to abort. Even if she is between 5-7 I would still recommend simply because they are not planned and puppies are expensive and very time consuming. 3) You will not be able to tell until at the very least 20-25 days at 20 days you can do an ultra sound. At 25 the vet can palpate and feel if she is retaining. 4) do not get mad at yourself, and do not give your family member the satisfaction and if you do choose to deliver puppies have the dog fixed before giving it to her. Dogs can technically be spayed at 6 weeks old but it is not recommended. I fear that if your were to give one to her she would breed for a byb sake. I know you did not wish this to happen and I commend you for your efforts but now it's done. I recommend a spay asap; it is safer than delivery I recommend a second vet opinion many will spay when unplanned because of the animal population being so high. I hope this helps. |

| Please don't feel like a bad Mommy. This is not your fault. You trusted someone to look after the dogs and they were irresponsible. I would discuss all options with your vet. I wish you all the best!! |

If the vet you usually use says to spay her now a higher risk, then inquire more as to why he/she feels that way. ONce you understand their thoughts, then you want a comparative risk assessment of having this puppy of yours have pups herself. (I'm assuming that she is still a puppy ie; under one year old or so). And quite frankly if she is small, young, and with an inexperienced breeder the risks are very large. Besides which you don't want puppies, and you as the owner have full right to make spay decisions yourself. If your current vet is uninformative, or uncomfortable with spaying her, then ask for a referral either from them or from your other friends who utilize vets in your city. There is no guarantee that your Sadie is pregnant, and did this family member of yours actually see them tie? JMO but if you do decide to go ahead and let her have puppies, that irresponsible family member would not be getting a puppy. Her judgement was appalling, and a breach of the trust you placed in her.

| She said Sadie and Scooter tied for about 10 minutes. Sadie is 10 months old and Scooter is only 6 months old. Sadie started her heat on the first of Jan. Sadie weighs 8 pounds and that is soaking wet. I am talking to the vet in the morning to see what she says. She told me she did not want to spay her because she was in heat and that in itself is dangerous. Thank you all so much for all the advice. I really feel so bad for my poor Sadie Mae |

| Honestly I would get a second opinion because the clinic I go to will and do spay cats and dogs when they are in heat and when they are pregnant. If she were further along I could understand more.
