| How do you get a house-broken furbaby to use potty pads? Ian is 1.5 years old and is very house-broken. We would like him to use potty pads as well, in case he has to go when we're not home. He will sometimes use a pad downstairs to urinate, but refuses to use the pads upstairs where he is when we're at work. He won't poop on either, so time is of the essence to get home. We have put a used pad under a new pad to get him to potty on it, but that doesn't work. Do you think using a reusable cloth pad will work? This winter has been a nightmare for going potty outside because of the snow and ice. I would like him to have an option. Thanks

| We're having the same problem with Zoe. She is 14 months old and totally housebroken. She will not go on a pad either. When we had that blizzard we had to dig a path to the backyard so she could go out. I think she would rather burst a kidney than go on a pad. Maybe somebody else can help us with our problem |

| Teddy was outdoor trained when I brought him home at 8 months old. I had to train him to use the pad when outdoors is not an option. Whichever kind of pads you use, I believe it is important to have a scent to attract the dog. The disposable pads have a scent attractor infused in them. For washables, you can buy a spray at most pet stores. First, I limited Teddy's freedom in the house so that I could supervise him closely. When he would paw at the glass door to get outside, I would take him to the pad and tell him to potty. Peeing on the pad came readily. I praised him profusely and gave him a kibble for each successful trip to the pad. We still praise and he dances for us, lol. Pooping was a lot harder. Teddy was so firmly programmed not to poop in the house. I lined up 6 pads together and I penned him in when I knew he needed to go. As he ran back and forth, I told him over and over that it was okay to go potty. It sounds silly, but this was one of the hardest things I have had ever had to do. When he finally pooped on the pad, I cheered and danced. He saw how happy I was and from that day forward, he pooped on the pad.

| same here Winston will use both but I have to confine him to get him to poop inside now in the bad weather. I was keeping a little girl for a friend and she would NOT use the pad even to peep in the morning. I put her on it over and over and said,"Molly honey I know you have to potty, it's ok, use the pad." I finally just turned around but stayed with her and she used it. Guess she just wanted some privacy!! lol |

| I would consider a grid system. Harley goes both in and out. mostly in though. There is a post in the training section called The Grid System, where I've posted a picture of Harley's system it uses newspapers as the absorbent. I've heard these are easier for the dog to be trained to do both than potty pads, cause once a dog is trained to potty pads they are used to the scent and some wont go outside. Hope this helps -Kendra

| Here's how I trained Max. Pee was easy. He seemed to get that pretty quickly using the normal confinement/watch carefully/praise when he went on the pad. Still there were some accidents. He is a little shy about going, so it was kind of hard to catch him going and praise him. But I think this was the key: Any time there was an accident off pad, I'd ignore it from Max's point of view. No annoyance, no pointing it out, no reaction at all. Then I'd use the pad to soak it up and put the pad back in it's place. (if it was poop, I'd just move the poop to the pad) Then about 2 minutes later, I'd walk to the pad (he usually followed me - if not I'd bring him) and go for the whole excited/praise/happy dance/whatever along with giving him a treat. It only took him 2 days to figure out that pee or poop on the pad got him a treat and there were no more accidents. Worked with Bella too a year later when she joined the family.

| Great advice everyone!!! Thank you. I have tried several of the suggestions, but I guess it will just take time. I had him in the bathroom with me for about 30 minutes (I was in the water room...on yorkie talk, with the door slightly closed encouraging him to potty. He just laid down on the pads, and did nothing but whine. I let him out, when to turn off the light and get my computer, turned around to poop on the carpet in our bedroom. If only I had waited two minutes more.
