| He peed in his water dish!!!! I am trying desperately to housebreak Finnegan. He's 13 weeks old and goes on pee pads in the house. Well, actually he seems to go everywhere BUT the pee pad, but he's supposed to be using the pads. He is a super smart dog, I can already tell, but he just can't seem to get the hang of going on the pad. He'll poo on it sometimes but will rarely pee on it unless I literally block him onto it for 10 or 15 minutes when I know he has to go (like when I take him out of the crate first thing in the morning). Yesterday, I actually watched him take a drink of water, stand over his water dish, and pee in it!!! I said no, grabbed him and brought him to the pad. But aren't dogs supposed to know not to go where they eat? Then this morning, he peed on my foot. He isn't lifting his leg so I don't think he's marking, I think he's just peeing everywhere! I clean everything with nature's miracle, too. The only place he won't pee is his crate. I never dealt with this with Lola, so I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?

| umm That is odd I have read That some dogs just dont "get" the potty pads. Gatsby trained really fast so I don't have any real advice. Maybe try to pull up some pee from wear he goes and with a paper towel and dab it on the pad so he goes there again. Did that make any sense?

| He is only 13 weeks old...potty training takes months with a pup its not going to happen over night or even in a few weeks. You have to teach him...If you are going to potty train him to potty pads, you need to confine him in a small area like a bathroom or x pen and cover the floor in potty pads to where he has no choice but to use the pads and when he uses the pad praise praise praise him by lots of lovings or a treat...after about a week or so of doing that start taking 1 pad at a time out until you are down to just 1 pad on the floor. And when you have him out for play time...don't take your eyes off of him, don't give him a chance to fail...and every 15 to 30 minutes take him back to his potty pads and give him a command like...go potty... and when he goes potty praise him and take him back out for some more play time as a reward. Do this after he eats as well. Don't take your eyes off of him or give him full run of the house very important...if you need to go fold clothes or cook and can't watch him, put him back in his confined area. I have a new baby boy too Harley, he is 16 weeks old and I'm in potty training as well but Harley is being potty trained for outside so I take him out every 2 hours and say "go potty" we been working together for 4 weeks and now when I say go potty he does his bussiness on command...and when I can't watch him in the house I put him in his play yard and set the timer on my stove for every 2 hours to remind me he has to potty and at night Harley stays in his play yard with 1 potty pad...its really working for us and he is doing really well no accidents at all yet but he is no where near potty trained for sure to have full run of the house yet....This is the play yard I use to confine Harley...I don't like crates I only use a crate for car travel...and I don't really have a small area in my house that I can confine him to without him being all alone and I don't want that I want him right in the middle of it all so I found this play yard online thur Ebay...Dogs / x pens...I love it....Good luck on the potty training...just remember to set them up for success...and that starts with you

| Thanks for the suggestions! I know he's young and I certainly don't expect him to be fully potty trained by now. My bigger concern is that he's peeing near his food, and I'm worried that somewhere that natural instinct of not going to the bathroom where you eat has gotten lost. BellaBaby08 - I've been keeping him in the bathroom every day and gradually reducing the amount of covered floor area by the pads. I've ordered a pen but it isn't here yet - hopefully when that comes things will get a little easier, as otherwise he does have run of the (very tiny) apartment. I'm getting another new baby next week (yay!), a little girl, so I'd love for Finn to have some grasp of where he's supposed to go before then. And good luck with Harley!!! I also haven't tried the spray that encourages them to go in a certain area yet - I think it's worth a shot. Even now when I eventually get him to use the pad, it doesn't seem to entice him to want to go back there yet. LaurenPatrice, that makes me feel better, knowing that other little guys have had/are having the same issues. I've never had a boy dog before so this is all new to me. Hopefully once the 16 week mark hits he'll improve a bit. Poor little guy also had a UTI when we brought him home (which has been treated), but I'm sure that didn't help matters any, as he was trying to pee all the time, wherever he was. I definitely know that his success depends on me, so I appreciate all the good advice! Thanks!

| Males, even some females mark to show what belongs to them and for other dogs to stay away... It used to make my females so upset when a stud would cock his leg on her coat..so my boys lived in a place of their very own...and they peed on each, their beds, water bowls, toys and my legs and feet...but that is what the unneutered do...I would put a belly band on him until he can be neutered, it prevents the smell...and he will return to that smell forever... |

| Well I have to admit that I chuckled when I read your statement about him peeing in the water dish. My little boy use to do that. He stopped it when I bought the kind that mounts on the side of the crate. He can't "get it up there" to pee in it so he uses the pad I provided. I honestly think he was doing it to contain it. So you might check out those style of containers. I just got tired of having to disenfect his dish twice a day (at least).

| Macy didn't get the potty pad until she was a year old. I've read where some get it by 4 months and some take longer. When he does get it, it will be like a light goes off in their head. Be patient, every dog is different, just keep hanging in there and don't give up.

| I'm laughing but I know its not funny to you. Thank goodness I'm past potty training for now. I want another one tho, so I can start all over again. Willow peed on their beds and I sometimes had to wash them every day. Boy was I glad when she got over that. Hang in there, one day they just seem to "get it" and he will too. Sometimes it takes a long time. Willow wasn't trustworthy until one year. But we finally made it.

| okay so you had that happen. well today Bentley decided it would be a great idea to stand up on the couch and pee all over my favorite blanket. he has NEVER done anything like it before and he's old enough and trained enough to know better. i'm hoping it's not a bladder infection with him and rather just a very "blond" moment in his potty training for him UGGGG i hate it though. |

Blond? Ok, now I have to ask. Your hair color is? Glad I am turning gray! No blond moments, just a lot of blank moments. | |

| LOL, Boys will be boys. Be patient, and consistent. Consistency is what works for them. He'll get it. Personally, I like to catch them in the act, like you did, and take them to the pad. For me, catching them and moving them over to the pad seems to click with them. So even though it doesn't feel like progress, it is. The puppy pee stories are funny. It lets you know you are not alone..we've all been there. My full grown Moka, my angel, peed on my brand new sofa when the neighbor girl came over to give her a potty break when we took a day trip. Once outside, the girl wanted to bond with her, so she picked her up, and Moka peed all over her. That was our first attempt with a petsitter. LOL. She's the dog that is the most dependable I've ever had in the house too. I think this girl just moved too fast for Moka to feel comfortable with even though she came over previously. LOL, she was all good about it though.
