YT Addict | Rawhide??? Went to the vet yesterday for a recheck for Teddi's ear infection (which is cleared up!! woohoo!) and our vet tech whom I love gave Teddi a rawhide candy cane. Now after what we went through with Gizmo we know that rawhides are NOT good for a pup. That is what we found through research on the net anyway. Are we wrong here?

| I wouldnt give them because they cant digest them and I think its more of an obstruction risk for a smaller dog

| Rawhides are fine provided you only give it to them for a few minutes at a time, and throw it away when it gets small/worn enough that they can swallow large pieces. |

| Stay away from rawhide - can cause intestinal blockage. Rio and Bullet got little rawhide chews for Christmas from one of my cousins - I said thank you and threw them away right when we got home! Good thing my cousin isn't on YT! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't think rawhide is that bad for a larger sized dog, I mean they sell millions of rawhide and very few dogs have problems. However, a small piece that didn't digest in a large dog, would not cause any intestinal blockage, this same small piece could cause a blockage in a yorkie. I look for chews that are 100% digestible, such as bully sticks. I should mention that last year they talked about a company making 100% digestible rawhide. They grind up the rawhide into a powder and then reform the rawhide into treats, this type of rawhide was considered safe because it could not cause obstruction, but they cost about 10 times more than the regular rawhide, and are difficult to find, maybe the vet used this?

| I gave it to Carlo on several occasions, and all he did was pass gas that cleared out the house. Not bad when the in-laws were over. LOL We have not given it to him in years now. I agree with what you write. Max has never tasted Rawhide, but I am sure she would love it. She gets IAMS Low Residue Treats only. |

| I gave my schnauzer a rawhide once. He ate a little tiny piece of it and threw up 3-4 times. Never, ever again. My yorkie doesn't know rawhides exsist and never will. I would stay away from them. |

Ok...first - thank you. I have been wanting to use this little avatar for a while now!!! Second - I was kind of wanting Teddi to never taste rawhide either. It happened so fast and it was in the shape of a candy cane and he was already completely digging it that I could not take it away from him!! @Nancy - I doubt that it was that type of rawhide. They were purchased in bulk at Big Lots. Another red flag for me but some people/vets do not see the problem with them. In fact the fill in vet said that they are so processed these days that they are fine. Personally I don't believe that and Teddi will never have another. One puppy 'oops' is ok but we try very hard to be the best possible parents to our little one. I doubt he will even miss them. Looking into the bully sticks but am questioning whether those are even necessary too. He likes his nylabones so think we'll stick with those for now. Thanks everyone!! ♥

YT Addict | Thanks Hi Nancy ~ thanks for that. I have to agree that we are probably more cautious than most but I know that the people from our CRF group are extra cautious as well with all of their babies, yorkie or not. Our vet is wonderful! She and the rest of our team helped give us an additional 7 mos. with our beloved darling Gizmo. Sometimes I think they generalize a bit with treats but I'm sure one won't hurt and I never thought you meant to imply that at all!! I guess I figured you were being like me - extra cautious! No worries!!

| I avoid rawhide for the same reasons as above, but Bully sticks are great and beef trachea is a new one that I find to be excellent |
