I don't think rawhide is that bad for a larger sized dog, I mean they sell millions of rawhide and very few dogs have problems. However, a small piece that didn't digest in a large dog, would not cause any intestinal blockage, this same small piece could cause a blockage in a yorkie. I look for chews that are 100% digestible, such as bully sticks.
I should mention that last year they talked about a company making 100% digestible rawhide. They grind up the rawhide into a powder and then reform the rawhide into treats, this type of rawhide was considered safe because it could not cause obstruction, but they cost about 10 times more than the regular rawhide, and are difficult to find, maybe the vet used this? |
