Yorkie obsession....feelings hurt

My grown daughter thinks we are overboard about the dog. Well, we are!

I don't have any children, and so I do lavish abnormal amounts of attention on Roxie. My family does think I take it overboard, and they make their comments often. Heck, you should have seen my mother's face Christmas Eve when Roxie jumped up on the couch to sit with me. Roxie sleeps on the couch ALL THE TIME, so it was no big deal to me, but my mother looked horror-stricken!

I think you responded well to your son. You have something that makes you happy, and that should make HIM happy.

lol...Ditto to this one as well, I've had family look strange when gizmo jumps on my couch and lays on the arm rest to watch me in the kitchen, or the fact that I had a doggie bed on the kitchen counter one day while cooking so he would be up high while watching me cook. Rest assured he would never come to your home and sit on your couch, or bed because he is well mannered and stays in his travel bag when visiting, unless he is invited out, but in our home he has the run of the joint.....lol

I guess most of us here at YT are also somewhat obsessed. For my situation...guess my family has just learned how to get used to it. They are probably more amused than anything else.

I do think it is sweet that your son loves you enough to express his concerns. Sounds like you have a really good relationship.

Well, that is one of the things that brought it up, he saw our xmas card exchange and thought it was absurd and that I would even be on a dog forum was the most ludicrous thing he has ever heard of. Said, I seriously needed to get help or get a life.

I did try to explain, I don' t have children, I work 8 hrs a day from home (claim rep) and in the evenings I enjoy talkng on YT and yes, I do feel I have friends here. He was applaud over that.

I think I will probably have to just let it be and he will just have to deal with it.

I guess, no putting up a sketch of Zhoie over the armoire I made for her, huh? LOL.

Oh - and my kids are about the same!
I was on the phone with my eldest daughter one day while Bruce was in the hospital, and she started on her favourite subject - Mom, you guys need to sell the house and find somewhere smaller, like one of those retirement centers.
I explained about the housing market here, and also we could not move into one of those retirement centers with two Yorkies.
She immediately said we should get rid of the Yorkies - they are only dogs!!!!

I'm so glad none of my family members are like that. All of my close family members are huge dog lovers and most have a dog themselves, and while they don't really necessarily do all the things I do with my dog (training, agility classes, bringing him most places with me that he's allowed, spoiling him, dog parks, etc) they all consider their dogs their babies, and Jackson a part of the family.

And keep in mind, I am a 20 year old college girl, so it's not really typical for people my age to be this into their dog, or dogs in general. But it's just something I enjoy. I love spending time with Jackson and don't see anything wrong with it... some of my friends that are my age don't understand some things I do and use the "it's just a dog" thing... but for the most part they're understanding. My good friend laughed at me and rolled my eyes when I wouldn't leave Jackson in the car by himself to go into the grocery store, but whatever, she just didn't say anything.

Now this is something I would love for someone to explain to me. I am genuinely perplexed. What or how am I suppose to treat a dog? Kaji is my first dog, and I understand dressing him, and getting him rain/snow boots might be a bit much; but everything else I do I thought was part of good dog ownership.

I'm sorry your son said something that hurt your feelings, but I bet anything he thought he was being helpful. Now if someone could answer my question, I can begin to understand why they think it's so odd.

You go right ahead and put that sketch up there. He'll get over being appalled at all of these things.

Don't worry - training the family well pays off. At first, I was met with the rolling eyes and "Cathy's gone bonkers" whispers behind my back.... I ignored it and it paid off.... This year my mother asked me two questions (1) Why do they smell like dogs? and (2) where are their christmas outfits? And the whole family came outside when we were leaving to see the babies in their snoozer car seats.

You know, I'm not sure but I know his wife is, so I'm sure he is at least some of the time. But his answer would be....it's about people, not dogs.

Oh well, I'm letting it go....I'm happy, Zhoie is happy and hubby kisses her all the time.....LOL.
