| Hello Hello! Wow, I just have to say, thank you so much to all the kind people who've already said hello to me! I've been lurking for a while as I do research into yorkies and figure out how/when we're going to get one. It took a while to work out what breed I wanted, and for a bit i thought it was going to be a chihuahua, then some sort of "designer mix," (but pretty quickly I realized for all the same reasons you guys advocate against, I didn't want to truck with that). It seems so obvious in retrospect that a yorkie is the right breed for us, but it took a while to slowly consider our lifestyle as well as what we want in a dog. It didn't hurt at all to see all the adorable picture of little yorkies you guys have posted or youtube videos of yorkies being themselves or doing awesome tricks. A smart dog, overflowing with personality and well-suited to a small home is exactly what we want. So now we're evaluating how to make it happen. We've looked at apartments, plan to talk to our landlord (maybe, just maybe, he'll say we can get a pup). The advice and stories posted here have been invaluable. We've already agreed that a pet deposit/rent is entirely reasonable, but the idea of coming up with a proposal is a great one. I can't remember who posted their own story about their experience with a landlord, but thank you! We're definitely going to give it a try Alternately, being the fiscally responsible adults that we are, we'll be saving up for a down payment for a place in the city in the next few years, which isn't a bad thing at all, just delayed satisfaction. I'll have to keep getting my puppy fix here for a while! This is turning into a russian novel post, but I figured I'd share my new furbaby must have list. Any advice, suggestions or admonishments are welcome This is not at all in order of importance, just in order of popping into my brain: 1. Pet insurance - I've looked into a couple of different companies and come up with PetPlan as what I think we'll go with. Does anyone have any experience with it? 2. Local vet, checked out, yelped and otherwise "vetted." Set up appointment for a general checkup 1-2 days after receiving pup. 3. Crate/bedding, toys, bowls, food, etc. Does anyone have some good recommendations for toy dog stores? Most of the generalized pet supply stores have a limited selection for the little guys. My favs so far are gwlittle, urbanpup and Glamourdog. That being said, some of the prices are a little crazy. Etsy has some seriously cute and very affordable accessories and clothes. ($50 for a dog sweater?!) And yes, we are absolutely, 100% planning on crate training our pup. In our minds, it is far too dangerous to leave a little one out and bored on the odd occasion when we aren't home to supervise. We've tried the puppy in the bed thing and as my S.O. lay awake unable to shift for fear of squishing the happily snoring dog, he said, "when we get a pup, it's being crate trained." There was a certain finality with which he said that, and so, no puppies in the bed with us. 4. Dog carrier purse - regardless of when/where we get the pup (e.g. at our current apartment or at an openly pet friendly home), I want a comfortable and safe way to carry my little one with me discreetly. This is more for personal style reasons than any effort to be sneaky, but if we are permitted to get a pup at our current residence, the stipulation will be to do so on the down low. We have a no pet policy for the building, but people have gotten exceptions made. Consequently, they try to be very discreet about their pets despite having the landlord's blessing. 5. Micro chip and local license - Pretty self explanatory, but if anyone has any suggestions, tips or cautionary tales, I'm definitely interested. 6. Puppy training classes - while we want to give it the ol' college try ourselves before we enlist the help of professionals (we've had dogs in the past, and many family members own/train/trial dogs, though not yorkies). 7. Flea/tick medication - Absolutely essential. We plan to start the pup on whatever our breeder recommends, presumably frontline, advantage or advantix. I have read too many horror stories about comfortis to even try it. 8. Grooming! There are loads of grooming kits and crazy vaccuum cleaner hair dryer attachments. I'm thinking some styptic powder, itty bitty nail clippers, safety scissors and a comb should do the trick. When she's a little older, I'll invest in a clipper. What are your tips and tricks for keeping their hair manageable? We're city slickers, so the long and gorgeous locks are out, and the puppy cut is in. Between dirty dusty streets and going in and out of a purse, she'd be a tangled mess in no time. 9. Puppy playpen This seems a little silly, but will save me a ton of worry while she's getting adjusted to her new digs. We've got a reclining love seat that has me checking out couches and ottomans discreetly (my man LOVES his recliner). When we get the pup regardless of the recliner, we can have her "out" and with us even when we can't watch her as sharply as we otherwise would. 10. Harness, leash, collar, tags and bells. So many things for one little dog! Obviously the collar would be exclusively decorative and utilitarian only in that it would have tags and bells (so we can find the little squirt when she inevitably does disappear out of our site and give me a heart attack). Do you usually just keep them in a harness around the house, collar, or zip? No worries - collar would always come off before going in the crate. No puppy strangulation while we're sleeping, thanks. 11. Finally, a really good pee/poo stain and smell remover. I have heard terrific things about "Bissell Pawsitively Clean Ewww Enzyme-Powered Pet Stain & Odor Remover" - do you have any recommendations? Even if we wind up moving before we get our little one, accidents are pretty much a given with a new pup. And, being in a city, it's also pretty much a given we'll be at least a few floors up, so getting outside on time, every time? Ha. Whew. Holy cow, I can't believe I wrote that entire thing. I can't believe anyone's gonna read it, either. Thanks to anyone who attempts it! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Your post is AWESOME ! Welcome to YT! Your kiddo is going to be one of the happiest, healthiest, loved, and cared for pups around. I have PetPlan for Pfeiffer (wish I'd gotten it for the boys, when they were puppies) and I really have had a great experience with it. They've been responsive, and all the expected 'covered' claims have been reimbursed super timely. They are great with communication too. Some people here haven't had the best experience w/ PetPlan though. Pet crate: this is what we used when we first got Pfeiffer. It was the perfect size, not too ugly , and fit a pee pad, water, bed and toys. Again, welcome to YT and can't wait to hear more of your journey in getting a yorkie!

| My 10 cents... 1. No idea-I've a maxed out MasterCard and Visa though pet insurance is a smart move, especially before you need it... 2. Local vet-you mean in your area or are you asking about your initial health check-GET THE INITIAL HEALTH CHECK! Test everything it may be a high initial cost but best to know now and have the option to possible do preventative treatment. 3. Crate I love the "Best Pethttp://konac.kontera.com/javascript/...rey_loader.gif " Playpen I have a Medium-and a hard crate. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ypen-tent.html I love eBay, many Amazon, I'm so into online shopping now that I'm price comparing...YT has a sellers section and WOW I've a list of things I NEED from people on here. 4. Kwigy Bo-I don't have one but I've participated in like 3 threads about them and this one seems to be the all time fav. on here. It's on my list of need to gets. 5. Get both...definitely not matter what get your dog microchipped-a tag can get lost or ditched- a chip well that's permanent. 6. ol' college try? If you aren't successful get help...I believe Yorkies are one of the few breeds that do require specific breed style training 7. Personally I use Frontline Plus- it is safe for dogs with seizures 8. I don't get your question-get a groomer unless you plan on cleaning anal glads yourself and doing ear plucking if needed etc... 9. See #3 otherwise a kids play yard (gates in hexi) works great! 10. Harness. For walking and I put my dogs ID tags on the D-ring of the harnesses Yorkies should NOT use collars. bells..ye sure go for it. Min wear their bright orange reflective harnesses every time we go out-period if we go out they are on. I do have cute decorative harnesses for specific occasions but in general mine are naked running around the house-unless I leave after an incident with the fire department I try to remember to harness them before I leave and they are alone in the house-just in case they get out... 11. Bleach-prefer nontoxic cleaners with the exception of cleaning up feces-ye bleach all the way for that one. Hope you get all the advice you need and find what works for you and your new baby! |

| Welcome to YT. It seems you have covered most anything a puppy will need. I would get a pin brush with balls on the end. You have been doing your homework. That is so good to see.

| Welcome to YT You're really on the ball! I can offer some crate advice. Attached is the crate we bought for Sophie when she came home to us. Now she is 2 and weighs 5lbs and still likes to go into her "doggie den" to take naps. I would suggest getting one large enough for her to grow. I like ours because it opens at the little door and on top. It has locking wheels for mobility and is easily broken down for traveling. Ours fits in the back of our SUV without taking it apart. It has mahogany corners so it look nice in any room. Keep us updated on your yorkie search

| She may need to read the preferred toys section and be made aware NEVER rawhide-bully sticks are the preferred by people on here...just sayin' now she's all covered! Oh and if you are a first time dog owner-get a list of dog hazardous item and post it on your fridge (I did for things that irritate dogs with seizures) like no chocolate, or raisins or grapes for dogs...no rosemary for dogs with seizures...now she's all good And the crate pictured above is cute... Donating YT 500 Club Member | I posted the story on a Pet Proposal!!!!!!!!! It really made all my wants come true and now I have my beautiful little girl! Best thing I did yet!!!! It really made them look at me as a responsible pet owner. Yes, money talks... When I typed my pet proposal up I immediatley offered a $25 monthly pet rent and non refundable $200 pet deposit.. I really felt this help ease their concerns. Good Luck! If you want me to email my proposal I would be more then happy too.. if you need some more ideas! | #2 So glad you view your new addition as an investment! The more you put in, the more you’ll get out. Sorry I’m completely across the country and have just acquired a new vet myself, still figuring out how it’s going to work out. All I can say from experience is if you aren't happy with the service you get, go elsewhere-even if you supposedly see the best vet in your local are- the sooner the better and if you find you have a medical issue way beyond your ability to understand bring it to YT chances are someone knows a thing or two and can be really helpful. #3 A lot of ppl comment the medium might be too large-I really disagree-if you put a potty pad in…the farther away the better, and besides bigger is better. They are cheaper on eBay-right now-search soft sided play yard… 5. I have ID tags but I’m breaking the law with lic.-on two of my three, even though ALL my dogs have their ALL vaccinations, two aren’t fixed and I’m sorry going from $12 to $50…I’ll just pay the $15 fine if I get caught-I’m naughty tho don’t do as I do-I'll get fined tomorrow watch! Seems like you are getting what you need and ye if you have dog experience just new to Yorkies I see what you mean now…People are special I love it-ya know I actually never knew that raw hide was bad until almost a year ago…no one told me…didn’t have a clue until the girl at the pet store commented that I was buying so many health conscious products and mini raw hide bones and her confusion…so glad there’s a resource like YT to get breed specific and general care advice-ye that have you been through some of the threads here-they’re just too cute and fun! Wish there was a MST (Miniature Schnauzer talk too)! Keep us update on how it all goes…pics! |

| @LuvTaycieGirl - that's a wonderful offer, and yay! I'm so glad you saw my post about you. I think we're covered - the man is gonna have a man chat with our landlord (who's also a friend, they hang out together on weekends), so I'll stop being a nag about it and let him handle it. I've briefed him on all the crucial details - pet rent, deposit, etc. and to mention how we plan on keeping/training the dog (and how she'll be with me most of the day anyway at work!) Your post was a great reminder on how to mention money - putting it on the table, ESPECIALLY since we pay such low rent for the area, is definitely an important and excellent idea. @concretegurl thanks for the tips on the play pen! I think pee pad are going to be necessary in the beginning, like it or not, so def a good idea on going larger. I just love that they can be folded up. Space saving dog furniture is friggin' awesome. Not like we won't have tiny little toys all over the place... ha! As for the rawhide, if you don't KNOW about the risks, that's totally one thing, and hopefully everyone finds out before anything bad happens. These folks were scoffing at how they gave their pups rawhides all the time and never had a problem, only to have their dogs wind up at the emergency vet. D'oh. Why tempt fate? |
