shipping?

I always get the creeps when I hear about puppies shipping. Believe me I know that cargo area in planes is most of the times below zero temperature. I also know that shipping puppies on container trucks in Eastern Europe is common and has a 50 to 60 % loss!!!
I know that put pj's to my little ones in a house that it's heated and they can still be cold. What can happen to puppy that isn't able to control it's temperature in a cargo area?
I think that if someone is willing to rase a puppy and commit to it for the next 15 years he should consider taking it in person from the breeder.
I try to educate people and make pet stores STOP selling puppies in my country for quite some time but still the commerce is huge and it's very difficult.
A colleague of mine is looking for a Yorkie for quite some time now. We've been searching for a decent Yorkie breeder for about a year. We managed to find one (he is a crazy Yorkie lover by the way) and he told us that he had reduced his couples because people doesn't ask for puppies as they used to. I know that people still buy Yorkies but they prefer pet stores because they are cheeper!!! Of course a new dog owned doesn't have a clue about all these(as I didn't) and by the time you find out it's too late. You have already been a part of it.
Talking about it and try to educate as much people as we can, I think is the only thing we can do.

As part of the discussion, let me add my perspective. Do I support 'shipping'? Well, it depends. What kind of 'shipping'?

I was able to pick up, in person, my first 2 yorkies. My 3rd kiddo, Pfeiffer, is from a wonderful member here (TammyJM), who lives in another state. Pfeiffer was lovingly flown, IN the cabin with another wonderful member here (LuvMySissy), who brought her to me at the airport - my first vision of LuvMySissy and Pfeiffer was them coming thru the security area and Pfeiffer was all tucked inside LMS's jacket - all cuddled in. So, that's my experience of 'shipping'. And it was nothing but positive .

I believe Michael Vick's horribly abused dogs were flown from his house of torture, to the Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. Was that wrong? Imo, no...BFAS was the place they needed to be; otherwise, they'd have likely been put down.

Rescue dogs are *sometimes* flown via cargo. Is that wrong? In some cases, it can be the right decision.

So, what do I think of shipping dogs via cargo? I'm not a fan of cargo, unless there is a VERY good reason/need to do it.

If you happen to be lucky enough to fly your kiddos around whenever you like, then I commend your luck and your ability to maintain a singular view.

Good breeders do not ship their pups willy-nilly. By definition, they'd do everything possible to do the opposite.

Also from personal experience, at least some of the people who are selling puppies on YT and DO offer shipping do so by having the dog flown in cabin with a friend of theirs (hard to expect them to do it personally when they have other puppies to take care of!!) I agree with Ann, though...even though flying cargo may not be our favorite option, there are instances where it would be preferable (i.e. re-homed dogs who it's either ship by cargo or be pts).

I would never have felt comfortable with shipping Livi's babies without an escort...which thankfully, I was blessed to have Jodie help with 2 of my babies. However, I did have 2 of my own puppies flown to me (no escort). I worried and stressed like you wouldn't believe!! One came to me from California and one from LA. I adore those furkids and so I am not sorry that I had them flown....I CANNOT imagine my life without them!! Was it a fun experience for them, probably not, but that was one brief moment in their long lives with a family that cherishes them.

Side-Note: Livi was happily wagging her tail when she arrived at the airport and immediately started playing when we got her out of the kennel. Our sweet Izzy was a bit more reserved, but quickly got past it once I held her.

In no way would I be excited about putting them in cargo but it would either mean re-homing them where I'd worry about the kind of life they would have away from me, or bringing with me (where they are happy) where they would have a very boring 8-ish hour flight in cargo. I don't believe that it is inhumane when precautions are taken to ensure they will be comfortable for the ride.
Obviously it is your choice to not ship your pups, but I think it's unfair that you would place me in a category due to circumstance that are not entirely in my control. I understand your concern because flights can be very stressful on pets (not just yorkies) but sometimes people have no choice and must ship their pet so they can still be with them.
I honestly don't even see a reason for this post, it sounds like you are attempting to get a rise out of people who do ship dogs, or have had them shipped to them. Take a step back and realize that not everyone in the world walks in the same shoes as you, and don't be quite so offensive towards them just because they have different circumstances.

We had to ship our cat over an international flight from Germany to the states because of the military. She had to be quarantined for 10 days I believe and we had absolutely no choice because of international guidelines and customs. I will say she was slightly traumatized because she was mistreated during the flight, but like you said it was either ship her or re-home her. I was a toddler when all this went on, so it wasn't my choice, but she went on to live a normal, happy life for 18 years until she died 2 years ago.

You just get them on the plane with you. I have shipped dogs before, never had a problem. Always something can go wrong. Heck, you can drive to pick up a pup and get into a car accident. You just do what you have to to get them home with you, and not worry about what others may thing. Do what is right for you! Let me also say, I think you are terrific, and thank you for your service.
