| Did your yorkie gain weight after they were spayed or neutered? So I have 3 yorkies all fixed. My female 5.2 lb 3 year old yorkie was spayed last August and is now a whopping 7 lbs. She has short legs and looks broad as she is long. Definitely should weigh 5-5.5 lbs. My 5.5 lb 2 year old male was neutered a year ago this next February and is a whopping 7.9 lbs. He too needs to be 6 at the most. Just wondering if your yorkie gained weight after they were fixed? I heard they would but surprised how much they have gained. Their mother just got spayed from my breeder and she says their mother is starting to gain. These are not big bone or back yard breeder dogs. I know the spayed and nuetering has been the factor. Just wondering if others have experienced this weight gain. I need to cut back on food and exercise them cause I don't want that much weight on their joints. My vet said over weight can be a factor for collapse trachea. I don't know about that and he is not in my opinion a expert on yorkies. My third yorkie is a puppy mill rescue and a big beautiful 17 lbs and carries his weight fine. He looks so much like a silkie. He is a beautiful dog that was sold to me as a teacup. Funny my house is full of teapots.lol |

| They need exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Yorkies, being terriers, can walk long distances and this will not only keep their weight down, but it is a good way to keep their organs working well.

| Wishing for a teapot Its been about a month and a half ago since Bella was spayed. She was barely two pounds and now weighs 3 as of today....We all did the happy dance in the vets office. The vet said it is very common for weight gain.

| I have a male that is 1 year 3 months. I had him neutered in may at 6 months. He hasnt gained. He's gained I'm sure normally being his was just six months but he weighs right at 6 pounds for a one year old, so no big weight gain as of yet. |

| My boys were not finished growing when they were neutered at 6-7 months. Based on their weight and build at 12 weeks of age, I believe they grew a little larger than they would have if they had been left intact. That said, neutering did not slow them down or make them bulk up. The best way to tell if your dogs are the proper weight is to feel for their rib cages, look at their waists and their bellies. If you cannot feel their ribs or see a waistline, then they could be carrying some extra weight. If that is the case, you are correct to watch how much they eat and exercise. |

| I held out on Apple's spay, because she only weighed 4 1/2 lbs. (on kibble)...I switched to raw, and got her to 5 lbs. and had her spayed...My vet told me to cut down on her food, after spay, and I didn't listen...She popped up to 6 1/2 lbs.! Next visit, the vet said it was time for me to be congnisant about her weight gain...I thought that was a nice way of putting it lol...I cut her back, and now she weighs 5 1/2 lbs., and looks great...On the other hand, Cha Cha, the Chorkie was spayed at 3 1/2 lbs., and I struggle to keep her at 4 lbs....I guess it's her metabolism...So, inatyq, yes and no lol...Buzz is not nutuered (will do at 18 months), and I struggle to keep him @ 6 lbs., and he's really toooo lean, for my liking...I'm hoping he'll plump up, a bit, after nueter... |

| I just had Ben neutered a couple months ago. He is gaining rapidly. He gained 1/2 a pound in the two weeks from neuter to getting stitches out. He was weighing in around 4 pounds (a little over or a tiny bit over) but he evidently gained some prior to the neutering as his chart said he was 4.5 and then went to 5 pounds 2 weeks later! I think he has gained more since then. I am thinking it is time I think about cutting his access to food. I have free fed all of my dogs for years and years. They have always been described as "lean" by the vet. But not so with Ben right now. I think he is also eating Annie's puppy food, so I am getting some All Life Stage Food to see if that helps a bit. I don't know if her puppy food tastes better or if it is just because he is not supposed to have it, but he will try to sneak it every chance he gets. It is higher in calories plus he is eating it in addition to his own. He gained up to 5 pounds once before. I can't remember if it was when I had puppies or not. But I do remember him being up there and then he slimmed back down. May have been a change in food too as I have gone through a couple different ones along the way. He seems to stay nice and slim on Canidae All Life Stage Chicken & Brown Rice. So, I may go back to that. Now that I think about it and since he must have gained prior to the surgery, his weight gain may be more due to the food situation than his neutering. Still, I don't think it helped. I wouldn't mind him carrying a little extra except for the health risks. I have read that it does increase the collapsed trachea. It also increases heart problems, joint and bone problems. They have enough health risks just being small dogs, I don't want to increase it by letting them get too fat.
