Default Help me decide if I should take her on vacation with us!?

We have taken Bella on vacation with us before...we took her with us to Cape Cod last year. It was a 7 hour drive and we stayed with friends so it was "easy" in that she rides well and if we went out for dinner I left her crated at our friends and she was comfortable. We went to a pet friendly beach each day so that she was able to be with us easily.

We are flying to Myrtle Beach, SC in May. It is a direct flight and only an hour and a half, I made arrangements and paid the fees for her to be able to fly in her carrier under my seat. I also made reservations for us to stay at a pet friendly resort. I think I've covered my bases for her to go. I hate to think about leaving her home with someone and just went ahead and made all the necessary arrangements for a vacation that was accommodating for her to go also. We have gone away for overnight stays without her and she DOES NOT do well with anyone else. She was our "rescue baby" and is very attached to us in an anti-social way. I worry about leaving her for longer because she shuts down and won't eat and acts depressed when we are gone for longer than a day, I've arranged for family to take care of her a couple of times and they always tell me the same thing. Honestly I never like to leave her at all because of this!

Anyway....(I know get to the point, what's the problem???) When I told my friend at work she was making comments like "well I hate to see having her with you ruin your vacation because you won't go to nice restaurants or certain places if you have her with you!" For the most part she will go most everywhere with us but I'm thinking my husband might want to hit a nicer restaurant occassionally (rather than just outdoor "dog friendly" dining for every meal) and I don't think I would dare leave her alone in our hotel suite. What are some thoughts on that? I think I would be a nervous wreck leaving her in an unfamiliar place that any employee could have access to!

I completely understand your situation. Kaji is attached to me in an anti social kind of way. I once left him for an afternoon with a friend and her yorkie and foster baby. Kaji knew them all very well and really enjoyed their company. BUT, it was a different story to leave him "all alone" for an afternoon. I ended up having to take him to the vet for nerves that caused him to loose his ability to hold his pee. (he had an accident on my old laptop) I think it's really sweet of you to take your baby into consideration and plan a vacation all 3 of you can enjoy. I for the most part have done the same.

As far as fancy dining goes, you can crate her in your hotel room, as long as that is allowed. (check your hotel's pet policy) You can leave a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. That little sign is respected most of the time. There is the "sneak them in" option, but not everyone is a fan.

I would take her with you...it sounds like if you don't, she will be a wreck and so will you...
I was nervous taking Shay to florida last Feb. but it worked out WONDERFULLY....we went out a few evenings to a nice restaurant, put "do not distrub" on the door, and left tv on, for a lil noise for him....(coarse he was crated)
Good luck!!!

well all I have to say is if she is that affected by being left alone, don't go on a vacation unless you can take her.
I just went on my first vacation since I got Teegy.
I searched for a place to stay that was dog friendly, where I could leave him alone if I wanted to go out to eat or for drinks.
West Jet allows pets on board in soft carriers that fit under the seat in front of you.
He flew well, he loved the fresh sea air of Nova Scotia and I'm so happy I was able to take him with me.

I've already covered everything else for taking her...I'm curious where you left your dog alone when you wanted to go out to eat and drinks...? Thanks!

Thanks for the insight of what you did LoveShay...I might be comfortable doing that. Sounds funny but I worry about her being taken more than anything regarding leaving her in the room alone, maybe I'm being paranoid?? (I would definitely crate her).

As far as it goes to eating in a nice restaurant we probably would order take out. I know it is nice to go to a nice place to eat but you did make a choice taking your baby with. When we go it is nice to eat our meals with the pets and they love that too. I would never leave mine alone in a hotel room because if she barked the employees could maybe check your room. I would really be worried also about someone stealing her. I think it is wonderful you are including her in the trip. Our last yorkie Keally wouldn't eat and the babysitter was mean to her and my parrots. We changed our lifestyle and bought a fifth wheel and truck for the pets. Now we have Kinder and she goes where we go. Good luck ; hope everything works out for you and I am sure you will have a wonderful trip with her.

I vote for taking her. I think you will be happier all around because you won't be worried about her missing you.

I think I would take her. Seems like you have all of your bases covered (travel plans, pet-friendly hotel, etc). If you do decide to go out to a restaurant or somewhere, I'd leave her in her crate and put up the "do not disturb" sign. Is she normally a barker/crier when you leave? Do whatever you are most comfortable with. I know it can be worrisome!

I also vote for taking her. My husband and I finally bought an RV so we could take them with us with no worries

I would have to say take her. I've taken Fancy with us and never regretted it. She is a very quiet dog though and I have a kwigy bo bag that I use to "sneak" her in everywhere. I would be nervous about leaving Fancy alone in the hotel room but that's just me - not because of potties because she is housebroke but I would be afraid of housekeeping stealing her. I know that sounds bad but you never know. I pretty much treat Fancy just like she is our 5th child! Wherever I take my 4 skin kids Fancy goes too. When they took pictures with Santa she was in the picture too!

I vote for taking her. We take both of ours. We have a playpen that they stay in if we go out. It folds and fits in a bag. It is part of our checked luggage. Most pet friendly hotels have a sign to put on your door if you leave your pet. I also check with the front desk. I give them my cell phone number so that if they do start barking I can come right back. The staff usually appreciates someone who is proactive about keeping everyone happy.

^^ this.

I have taken my pets numerous times on vacations where I had to leave them in the room for short periods.

ALWAYS Crate them in the room, this way if someone does walk in my accident- the dog will not bolt- even a very well behaved dog may not listen to someone they don't know in a strange environment.

Leave the TV on, this will block some of the outside noise out and help calm the dog, hopefully this will cut down on the barking.

Like above, I leave my cell phone number with the front desk- this way if there is a problem you can come right back.

Bring a blanket and toy from home that hasn't been washed before you come- this way they will have the smell of home.

I will usually put the dogs away in the room and then go get ice and come right back- then do it again and go to the lobby and come right back- this way they realize that even though you are leaving them in a strange place, you are going to come back.

Good Luck with whatever decision you make- I have taken numerous vacations where I couldn't take mine and they always do fine- but it is nice to take them sometimes and get to enjoy your vacation AND not miss your dog at the same time.

I was a wreck, the first time we went out....worrying someone would take him...we only left for a lil while first time like 20 min..lol...and sneaked back up...like we were going to catch someone at our door...lol...so paranoid? NO....we love our lil fubabies, and we are responsible, of coarse we worry..I made sure we wore his lil butt out before we left, so he would be tired and sleep...it all went wonderfully...

Okay, here's my take. I would take your baby, no matter what. Not everyone will have had my experience, but after my experience, I promised my babies I would never leave them again. Am I paranoid? Maybe, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Last year I left my babies with my Vet's boarding service. I went for 12 days back east (I live in California) for my mom's funeral. Everyone said not to take them because they would interfere and get in the way. So I listened to them. I've used my Vet for about 12-15 years, so I had no qualms about leaving my two babies, Cassie 2 1/2 and Muffin 1 1/2. The night I got back - to make a long story short, Muffin became very ill and was falling to the side, cried all the time and finally couldn't walk. My Vet confirmed she was blind in one eye. I discovered she got Vaccinosis from the TWO shots someone at the Vet's gave her and she almost died. Had I been there I would have told them never to give two shots at once, especially, if one is the rabies shot. Ten thousand dollars later and lots of tears and prayers, she is okay, and almost 100% back to herself again. But not without lots of agony. Also, don't leave them alone in the hotel room. I wouldn't. I just wouldn't. Too many Yorkie nappings going around. Am I paranoid? Maybe. But again, I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'm sure you could find a way to go to a nice restaurant or two, even if it means hiring a sitter who is experienced and has recommendations. I know if you take him, you will have a good time no matter what you do. Good Luck and have fun.
