Floppy Ear?

It does not matter, if you don't mind. some people like the floppy ears. They are just as cute and loveable with or without ears.

thats ok then. my sasha looks sooo cute with her floppy ears. My other yorkie crystal's ears stand up have since she was pup. and looks just as cute.

No, there's nothing wrong with it! I just wanted to know why they were standing up and now one is flopping over! He's freakin' precious either way... I was just curious as to why all of a sudden, it was floppin' over! Silly puppy.

No it doesn't matter. But, if your pup is prone to ear infections having floppy ears can contribute to it.

I just re-trimmed 12 week old Max's ears last night as his are still floppy. My vet believes it's completely hereditary, whether or not the Yorkie's ears will stand up. I may wait another couple of weeks before taping them up again.

Have his Ears shaved, inside and out all Hair and feed him COTTAGE CHEESE as a Supplement/Treat! I have 4 Yorkies, 2 males and 2 females, 6, 5, 4 yrs. and 6 months old. From 10, 8, 6, and barely 3 lbs. It does'nt matter what Sex,
Weight, Age or Color they are all Yorkies and all 4 have Erect Ears that stand-up all the time.......it matters to me b/c that's what the Breed Standard is and that's what they are so, I expect them to like a Yorkshire Terrier and that happens to be one of their traits. Besides I really believe that they "Hold"
the Ears up themselves and it's a choice they make and is part of their Grooming too? I also used to scratch/rub the inside of their Ears to make them more self-conscious to Hold them up themselves.

Some pup's ears tend to flop during key periods in their growing period; teething, growing, testicles being seated and/or ear leathers being a bit thicker and of course heavy coated pups too. Calcium being pulled to those areas needed will also contribute to the ears flopping. More often than not, smaller dogs require very little assistance. However, allowing them to stay down without bracing them, will break the cartilage in the ear....

Mardelin - i hate to tape Max's ears with everything he's recently been through. He's a big boy; about 4.5 pounds at 12 weeks. Do you think I can wait a little longer to tape his ears?

What are your thoughts about the concept of ears standing based on hereditary traits?

Mardelin - Fynnlie is 11 weeks. I got him at 10 and they stood up all by themselves. Then, two days ago, his left ear started flopping, just a little. It stands up most of the time, but when he's running or something, the left one just flops like crazy while the right one stands up just, well, right. He's teething and humping everything he can get at to hump. As far as I know, he's never had an ear infection. Do you think I should get his ear shaved and tape it up or give it a few more days just to see if it stands up?

Hugo as a puppy had one floppy ear, then both of them stood up. He is over a year now and his ear is now flopping again (not by much) I find it to be adorable!!!

The smaller ones, tend to get them up on their own. The faster growing pups, I always struggle with. I tend to be constantly taping them up. I use Dr Sholl's Mokeskin Plus Padding....it is a bit more comfortable on them. However, to reinforce the adhesive, I use Surgical glue. Cut the pad to the shape of the inside of the ear. With your boy size I would recommend them being braced with a piece of masking tape, wrapped around the ears. Got to link I posted, it better illustrates the masking tape bar brace.

The herditary trait I haven't really studied, as I've had difficulty in some litters where sire/dam, grandsire/granddam, great grandsire/greatgranddam and so and so on, back 10 generations have had no issues.

Keep them shaved, if they aren't up solid in a couple of days, assist them. Let him hump away....the faster he gets his little testicles to seat...the better for his ears and teeth. Humping does assist them in dropping.

I usually begin shaving them at a week of age; both sides all the way down. I know they don't have much hair yet, but I want them to get use to the vibration as well as assisting the ears.

I tried to shave max last night. His hair is already super short from the shave 2 weeks ago. The *ahem* bikini line trimmer and the Wahl clippers made too much noise. I'm just not confident grooming myself and never really plan to so I didn't force the issue. When he fell asleep I took hair scissors and gave him a great little ear haircut. He didn't even wake up. I was able to cut very short.
