The smaller ones, tend to get them up on their own. The faster growing pups, I always struggle with. I tend to be constantly taping them up. I use Dr Sholl's Mokeskin Plus Padding....it is a bit more comfortable on them. However, to reinforce the adhesive, I use Surgical glue. Cut the pad to the shape of the inside of the ear. With your boy size I would recommend them being braced with a piece of masking tape, wrapped around the ears. Got to link I posted, it better illustrates the masking tape bar brace.

The herditary trait I haven't really studied, as I've had difficulty in some litters where sire/dam, grandsire/granddam, great grandsire/greatgranddam and so and so on, back 10 generations have had no issues.
