It all depends on the region and breeder; Which dam/sire produced the progeny. Average is anywhere from 3-4 thousand dollars. Keep in mind very few show dogs are sold; as most reputable breeder/exhibitors are breeding for themselves. So, good show dogs are hard to come by when you are first entering the show world.

That is true. I wouldn't want to part with a dog that I have worked hard to ideally breed for many years. That would be so hard; I've noticed some breeders will write a disclaimer saying that they reserve the right to pick the ones that they keep from the litter first (worded better). Thanks for giving me an idea on a round-about price. That seems fair for someone that plans to be competing for show, and may win money for the best in show.

The disclaimer is really out of a stud contract.....At times pick of the litter is used instead of a stud fee. However, if you are using your own stud and bitch, that is totally unnecessary. As, most of us breed for ourselves, and it is understood that no puppy will be placed until our assessing has been completed. Most reputable/breeders do not take deposits until the pups are viewed in person anyway, so such a disclaimer is unnecessary.

Those Best In Show Yorkies are few and far between.....the cash winnings, nowhere begins to cover costs that it takes to campaign a dog. Anyway, if you're using a handler, the cash goes to the handler, not to the owner of the dog.

I love nothing more than people who do $500 non-refundable deposits. That's what ticked me off about the breeder we were going to go with. Umm excuse me...what if I get to your home and it's a disgusting disaster? What if I don't like any of your puppies because they are lethargic? You get to just keep my money? I don't think so. To me, that's pure greed. There is no reason to do such a thing. First come, first serve. What's wrong with that?

I see. Are some owners the handlers of their show dogs at competitions? Either way, I know it will take more money than the winnings to properly train, feed, and groom a show dog. The wraps are intriguing to me. My neighbor a few doors down won't even bring her Yorkie outside to use the bathroom due to the harshness of the blades of grass on the coat. Now she is facing an outdoor competition in September, and her dog hasn't ever walked across grass. She's stressed.

By that time the breeder has invested time and energy in the interviewing process. You aren't the only person that was interviewed. So, if you change your mind after you picked the pup, the deposit is kept. Now if for some reason something happens to the pup, between the time you picked it and the time you're allowed to take it home, the deposit should be refunded.

Of course; most are breeder/owner handled. However, if you are actively campaigning a dog, traveling can get very extensive. At times having a Professional Handler is the least expensive way to go.

I don't have an issue with breeders who take one AFTER I see the puppy...but seeing an "ADORABLE" staged picture online and forking over $500 is not acceptable. I wouldn't even give $100 to someone without seeing the litter first. In my search for Piper I was astounded by how many I came across that did this. Literally, every single solitary one of them did except for the one we got her from. I searched dozens and dozens of breeders...even those across the country.

Mary, I would pay quite a bit to get one of your pups knowing what goes into them. Again, the real expense comes after the purchase. Whatever it takes....that is my story and I am sticking to it!

A professional handler would be an awesome job for a single person who loves dogs and loves to travel. Why didn't I think about that growing up? I'm sure they have their work cut out for them also, but it has a nice ring to it. (:

In a lot of cases, the deposit shows the breeder that you are serious. What he he reserves one for a person, and then at thel ast minute they chnage their mind, after telling others that he has none available? It also is deducted from the final price, but if something does happen, you should get it back, or it should be applied to hold a pup from another litter. That is why it is smart to deal with respectable breeders, and have a meeting of the minds. If it does not feel right, just walk away. It is a 12-18 year commitment for a Yorkie.

A good handler is hard to come by. I used one, early on. He only handled for me and my mentor. I prefer one that only handles yorkies or at the very least toy dogs. I will not even contemplate using an all breed handler.

Now would you believe, I went back to Texas and brought back a little girl from my mentor. She makes her debut next month in Dallas.
