Most reputable/breeders have a nonrefundable deposit clause in their contracts. However, it is not taken until a puppy is decided upon. By that time the breeder has invested time and energy in the interviewing process. You aren't the only person that was interviewed. So, if you change your mind after you picked the pup, the deposit is kept. Now if for some reason something happens to the pup, between the time you picked it and the time you're allowed to take it home, the deposit should be refunded.
