| Yorkie Tails... I am probably opening a huge can of worms by what I'm about to ask. So let's all remember that this is a sensitive issue, and lets not be rude in responding... After reading the post on Yorkie tails, I thought this may be a good time to ask. Recently Nova Scotia banned the docking of tails in veterinary practices, at current time I know New Brunswick has had this type of legislation for a while, not sure about other provinces. Seeing Yorkies are required to have a docked tail by breed standard, I wanted to see what people think of this. A friend of mine who shows in confirmation called CKC to see what thier thoughts were on this. Seeing a vet can no longer do this procedure, the only way a tail can be docked is if the breeder does it themselves, or if you take them out of province (which doesn't make much sense for a few day old puppy). my friend was told by the person she spoke with, "It's your responsibility to follow standard, if a vet wont do it, then do it yourself" Not thier exact words, but pretty close. I'd love to hear from you what you think of this. I don't show, but it seems to me that if docking is becoming banned slowly province by province that it might be worthwhile adjusting the standard? Anyone from a country that has banned docking... what do you do if you show?

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | The docking of tails is banned here in England with an exemption for certain working dogs. I believe that if countrys are starting to ban the docking of tails then the kennel clubs should recognise this and think about changing their standard. If a vet wont do it and it is left to the breeder themselves things COULD turn nasty. I know there are many many breeders out there who know what they are doing when it comes to docking tails but I bet there are some who dont. Take a look at this link and you will see some photo's of DIY docking jobs that have gone wrong because they were not docked at the correct age: Tail docking information from the Council of Docked Breeds A procedure like this in my eyes is best done by a vet, and if the vet refuses then this could cause problems. As I have already discussed, my Poppy's tail was not docked because it is not allowed here in England but she has broken the end of her tail by accident (I woke up one morning and it was broken dont know how she did it). I took her to the vet and the vet said she would be fine because it was right at the end of the tail and she isnt in pain, she told me that it would be more distressing for her to try and fix it so just to leave it to heal. This could have been avoided if her tail had been docked when she was young... so there are arguments on both sides.

| I agree, if the law has changed then the breed clubs need to change the standard. I know there are a lot of breeders who do the docking themselves. I could not do it. I hate sitting in the waiting room and listening to them cry. |

| The standard will change if the new law goes country-wide. The CKC should probably allow undocked tails now though so breeders aren't forced to do it. That said, I think there are better things to do with government money like ending puppy mills and factory farming.

In my area there aren't a lot of Yorkies, so it's super hard for a Yorkie to place in the small group. I think it's outrageuos that the CKC hasn't responded to this yet. It sets up the potential for a serious mistake by a back yard breeder (an unfortunately there are lots of them around here).

| "A procedure like this in my eyes is best done by a vet, and if the vet refuses then this could cause problems." I fully agree with this. There was a huge uprise of animal rights people arguing that this is the best thing that has been passed, and that it's so great. Which ok I see the arguments for and against docking. But at the end of the day, unless they have the police force to police the issue, I think the dogs are in a worse situation now... it's a fine if breeders are caught (I think) but I know someone who reported a family keeping thier dog outside in a huge snow storm... and the authorities took 3 days to repsond. They don't have the man power here to inforce such legislation. At least if the vets can do the procedure, it's done safely. Not that I'm endorsing tail docking, I try to lay low in the for or against argument.
