| That's horrible!! In California, where I live, we call the Humane Society and they come right away and break the window and take the dog away. Next time call the SPCA or Animal Control... and exaggerate the time you've been there.

| Some people just should not have dogs if they dont know how to take proper care of them. Would he have left a child in the car on a hot day like that!!!! Well done you for trying to do something, i dont think i could sit there and see that either. xxx

| I noticed my state (TN) was not one of the 14 states with a law for animals in parked cars. However, my city's animal control ordinances do state that a person shall not leave a dog or cat unattended in a parked motor vehicle in a manner that endangers the health and city of the cat or dog and that a person may use reasonable force, including, but not limited to, breaking a vehicle's window to remove the animal from the vehicle if the person reasonably believes the animal is in imminent threat of death. I would contact animal control in this situation, who will probably also be able to best advise you on laws in your area. |

In GA, animal control and the police department are one in the same. If you call animal control during off hours, the calls roll over to the police. Calling the police, first, here is the best option. Wow, after reading this post, if I saw something like that and called the police, I wouldn't mention the window being open at all. That guy obviously doesn't care about his dog...the neglect, the smoking, the gas fumes!!!!!!

| Ohio is also not on the list but i know that in my area if the animal is in distress and you call 911 they tell you to check the doors and if they are locked break the windows. my 16 year old sister volunteers at the hospital on weekends and on her way home one night she sees a dog laying in the floor of a car in a puddle of his own vomit and panting wildly she called me and then conference called 911 they told her to holler for a person to come as a witness, and then smash in the front left window (they wear very particular about that) when she did she was able to get the door unlocked and the dog out (it was a bigger dog) and once he was in the cooler air he perked up then the humane society come and got the dog they went in and had a announcement made on the loudspeaker about it i guess they had been out camping or hiking and there child was injured so they really had no choice but to leave him in the car but i still think it was wrong.

| A friend of mine was involved in a situation like this once. She broke out the window, then waited for the owner to return. When they did and started to protest about window threatening legal action, my friend's reply was, "Go ahead. If you go after me for breaking the window, I'll pursue animal cruelty charges against you." I'm with the other folks who said they would have 'forgotten' to mention that the window was cracked at all. It was such a minute amount you could have very believably said you didn't see it. Unfortunately though this didn't sound like a very caring or concerned pet owner. Short of removing the dog from his care, it doesn't sound like he was very impressed at all by your attempts to set him straight on how dangerous it is for that poor dog in a hot car. |

| Thanks for Posting this Information I am relieved to know that my home state, Arizona, has a law. I just wish it had a little more meat to the desription of just cause to intervene. It's rather vague and open to wide interpretation. But, at least it's someting. We certainly get temperatures that are way to high a majority of the year. Thanks again! |

| I saw a story on the news the other day, this woman was really upset because her toy dog had been stolen outside an Atlanta mall from her car. The police looked at the mall footage and weren't able to see the robbery, however they informed her that if they HAD been able to see her dog locked in the car on the footage, they would have to arrest her for animal cruelty. |

YT Addict | This is true and I have done it before. Before I did it I called the police and said it was an emergency, and they said to go on and do it.
