| Getting a new puppy on Friday & have questions... I will be taking care of a 7 month old female yorkie for an indefinite amount time and the person who had her before says she is not potty trained. I'm worried because all of my apartment is carpeted, except the kitchen, pantry and bathroom. I need advice on the best way to potty train (crate train or weewee pads). I haven't had a dog since I was a kid so I am totally lost and need your help. She was sleeping in that person's bed and gives her a hard time about staying in the crate at night. I would like her to sleep in the crate at night. Am I going to have a tough time retraining her? Also, she is not spayed, which means she will be in heat. How will I know when that happens?? Is there going to blood all over the place? Yuck!! How many times a day do you feed your dog? Should I only give her water when she eats? I will go to the library tomorrow to check out some books but any advice would be appreciated. Pleas wish me luck. Thank you. |

| oh my .. first congrats.. you will have fun and hard times.. but PATIENCE IS KEY! OH WELCOME TO YT. what i did for with my baby was crate him only to sleep but he was already pad trained b4 i got him. so he knew where to go.. i suggest you gate her in one specific area until you are sure she knows where she has to go .. dont give her the run of your house just yet do it in your terms... she will cry when you crate her be prepared for that .. 7mths old thats tough.. but again be patient. you can either feed her 3 times a day or 2x or free feed.. what did the previous owner do?? you should ask her questions.. ALWAY LEAVE OUT FRESH WATER FOR HER .. she will drink when thirsty. about the period i dont know i only have a male but im sure others here will help you out with that one.. GOOD LUCK AND COME BACK FOR MORE ADVISE WE ARE OPEN 24/7 LOL

I would start out with a gate in the kitchen area. use a peepad or take her out side. I would take her out quite often at first so she knows that thats exspected of her. If and when she does have an accident and pees on the floor . Do not yell at her . Just tell her no bad and take or out said and or on the pad. Then tell her to go potty. repeat this each time and make sure you tell her good girl and maybe give her a treat or lots of attention when she does go on the pad. The key word Is patience,Understanding and lots of encouragement. As for feeding her I free feed mine I leave their food and water out t all times. Mine both only eat small amounts at a time so this works well with them. The heat question You need to ask them when her last heat was. Some dogs bleed more then others. You will know when shes coming in heat by the swelling of the nipples and private area. They sell panties for that and I use panty liners in them that way you can change them as needed. Good luck on the little girl. | |

| well when we got Maisy she was 3 months old and wasn't fully potty trained outside..just on weewee pads and so since our house is carpeted too we put a crate in the bathroom and leave the door open to the crate and put a doggy gate up between my room and the bathroom. There are her "safe to play alone" toys in there and water and a wee wee pad. Thats where she sleeps and is whenever we aren't supervising her |

Water should be left down all of the time and changed daily. Are you going to be there with her all day or at work? If you will be at work all day, then I would also leave food down while you are gone. Leave some safe toys to play with. They love sqeaky toys. Feel free to ask any questions on this site that you have. Most people here have had small doggies and yorkies most of their lives.

| Hi! Welcome to YT!!! If she's 7 months old and has not been in heat yet, she soon will be. No you won't have blood all over the place. You do need to get dipers ready for her. The first two heats are really light. About sleeping, well if she has been in your friends bed, she's going to want to be in yours too. Really, it's kind of cool, and because they are so small, they don't take up too much room. But they do find a way, to have you move over, if your in the space they want. I have to tell you this, be ready to fall in love with her. Because, they just look at you, and you melt. You will now have a forever friend. Good Luck! And again, Welcome!
