when coming to the mixing of breeds and working to get them accepted in to akc as a breed...i had questions some of which were answered towards the end of the thread...

so labadodles, have a purpose? - is that the hair type? i dont know so im asking seriously which may result in other questions..BEWARE..LOLOLOL

I'm not familiar with what purpose these breeders are breeding the Laberdoodles for. But, it is far more than to get coat type. AKC will only accept a breed when correct historical documentation is provided and the dog has a valid purpose. Now, because AKC is evaluating, it does not mean the Laberdoodle will be accepted. The question should/can be answered with a bit of valid research.

Not sure I have the correct answer, but I thought their "purpose" was for service dogs, in an effort to produce the poodle's non shedding coat. Someone, correct me if I am wrong.

Another very important point to keep in mind is that when a purebred carrying a genetic defect is crossed with another breed or mixed breed, the "bad" genes do NOT "go away" even though they may not be expressed in the offspring. If crossed with another dog carrying the same defect, the offspring of that breeding will demonstrate the defect.

When you breed two different breeds together, what kind of variation can you expect?
Pfaffenberger's book has some interesting data on this. He did some experiments with four different breeds. They were dogs of approximately the same size, but very different physical appearance AND behavior. The results he saw in the first and in subsequent mixed generations are pretty interesting.

Let's look at a common crossbreeding: "cockapoos" (which are not purebred dogs, nor registered with any registry). These are crosses between Cocker Spaniels and Minature or Toy Poodles. The dogs actually vary quite a bit, some being more poodle like than others, and some being more cocker like than others. However, they are generally all a small sized, buff colored shaggy dog. If you breed two cockapoos together (not generally done), you get an even wider variation of dogs -- some look like Minature Poodles, others like Cocker Spaniels. The reason for this is the recessive genes hidden in the first cross that came out in the second generation. This is actually a visual example of why "hybrid vigor" doesn't hold.

There is no such thing as hybrid vigor in my opinion, so I agree that it doesn't hold true..

Breeding of cockapoo to cockapoo IS generally done now by most cockapoo breeders. And once you get to the 3rd generation (and up) there is coat/look consistency.

There is also a standard written for the cockapoo.

Also the labradoodle is made up of lab/poodle/cocker (labradoodle bred with a cockapoo) according to the Australian Labradoodle standard (that is of course now being bred in the US).. and of course there are the ones that just breed lab to poodle but the are not true labradoodles.

Yes and no. It was for the purpose service dogs, but not just because they were non-shedding. Throw a non-shedding breed with something else enough times and eventually you will get a non-shedding dog out of it. The breed's (I use that term because they ARE recognized in Australia now) originators focused on more than just a non shedding coat and continuously run test on the hair, coat, skin, dander and saliva and then test the results on those with allergies. So it was a bit more than just getting a non-shedding coat. (Does that make sense?)

What organization is the standard recognized by? Not AKC, at this point, so I'm assuming a 'parent club' for Cockapoos? Not disputing your claim, I'm just honestly curious because I didn't know this. I'm interested in looking into what steps they've taken to get where they are and what they are doing to continue their efforts. TIA.

In my opinion when you breed a shedder with a non shedder your still gonna get somewhere down the line a shedder again. If you keep breeding a lab to a poodle you will get a shedding dog somewhere. If you want a non shedder get a breed that is just that....a poodle is a great service dog and so is the lab. I still have a problem with the mixing of the two and if AKC recognizes the labradoodle change the name it's aweful for an AKC recognized breed lol...of course this is all my own interputation..

But you could still breed shedding out, no? You'd just have to breed carefully. At some point, we'll be able to read canine genomes and this will all be moot.

Anyway, interesting thread after an inauspicious start. I really don't see what's wrong with encouraging people to look at rescues.

I so agree with this, Donna. If this means what I interpret it to, it's a sad day coming. Is AKC now driven by money only? Can enough people, just by weight of numbers, get the AKC to cave? Maybe I should just cross register my dogs with APRI and be done with it.
