| I really have been surprised by the number of people who ask me how much I paid. I've never been curious about how much people pay for their dogs so it really strikes me as odd when people ask. I usually answer honestly unless I get one of those feelings in the pit of my stomach about the person, then I just ignore the question and turn my attention back to my dogs

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Well yes I have - just a few times. But imagine I often walk my lil Yorkie with my large Black Russian. What I get most often is ooh's and aawh's most ppl get they are purebreed and even say those dogs are purebreeds aren't they? I respond yes they are. Then they say I guess they are expensive ---- I say yes but the initial cost to purchase is only a small dollop in the ongoing cost of keeping your dog healthy and happy. And then sometimes they ask well how much would one of "those" dogs cost. And I respond it varies depending on whether you want a show/working dog or not. But at least with a purebreed you have a very good idea what you are getting. Personality, health issues etc. With a good breeder you will get lifetime support - u have questions concerns etc they are there for you. I know that I'm lucky in a way because I never worry about someone trying to steal my Razzle. They would have to go through Magic and me first. Not very likely!

| I would never ask a complete stranger what they paid for their phone, camera, car, house, etc. it is rude. Unless it is a close friend or family member that I feel comfortable with asking, then I will ask. But that is what this thread is about, complete strangers asking you how much you paid for you dog. I don't feel anyone on this thread is on a high horse.

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Why not your dog? Good question - well maybe we think our dogs are not computers, phones , cameras, or cars. They are not inanimate objects. Not property. Umm if you adopted a child and someone asked you how much did you pay for her him how would you feel? Ie through private adoption agencies etc. One can ask many honest questions - but it is not the asker's right to get an answer from a complete stranger.

Just b/c something is a simple honest question, doesn't mean it should necessarily be asked. Such as Have you gained weight?/How much do you weigh? Are those real? How much do you make? etc, etc, and especially should not be asked by a complete stranger. Or how about the "I don't like you, I'm just being honest."

Not a dog situation but it still irks me... once I was flagged down while I was driving my brand new car just so the guy can ask me how much the car was. I had just gotten my car stolen 3 months prior to that, so I was scared when approached in such an aggressive way. How crazy was that?

| Oh yes, all the time! It really is a tough question, because I want to trust everyone that they might just be looking into getting one, but it's always the first thing to think that they might want to steal one of my boys. I will sometimes say "oh, haha, too much", or I might lie about how much I paid for them...I just don't think that's a very polite question to ask, you know? Kinda like asking a lady her age - not a very ok thing to do.

| Donating YT 11K Club Member | omg yes!!!! ppl ask ALL the time! When i was a yorkie newbie and had first gotten Teddy i would tell ppl the truth but over the years i learned from experience not to tell them. There are several reasons why. Well one time this ignorant lady on the train saw me with London and kept staring at her. Finally she asked 'how much she cost?' I told her and she looked at me like I had 3 heads and said 'for a DOG?!' just like that. I could just tell she was ignorant. Anyway after that i stopped telling ppl. But anyway now I just tell them it was a gift from my mom or something..and then sometimes ppl will say 'Oh they cost like 2 grand right?' and I'll be like 'No, not at all' because I know if I say yes some word gets around..and bad ppl will think to steal them to sell them. It's horrible. I actually dissuade ppl that 'say' they want one just cause they are cute...unless someone is REALLY interested and I know them.

| Ok, first of all, I loved the Hallmark story. If people are rude enough to ask questions like that, then they deserve an answer like that. Yorkies are expensive. Once I determined that it was the kind of dog I wanted, and researched, I was a little surprised, ok a lot surprised, at just how much they cost. Once my husband got over the shock, he has been wonderful and helping me to save money for the puppy. The timing is perfect, I get to pick up the puppy on my birthday. My hubby says, "well, you'll just get an expensive birthday gift this year." If people ask how much I paid, I would probably say, he was a birthday gift. Most people don't understand that kind of money for a dog. But according to all the research that I've done, you get what you pay for.

| I just say they differ in price really and if they were interested in getting one would advise them to find a good breeder. Hugs Shirl x x |
