Do you get asked how much you paid for your Yorkie? It happens quite often, that after someone pays a compliment to Rio, the next question is "How much did you pay for her?" I get nervous when people look at her and just see $$$$$ and I usually lie and say I got her free as a gift. I've only told 2 strangers the truth and that was only because they were with their own sweet little furbabies and had chatted about their own experiences first. After reading the thread by pawever Yorkie with her little Mini almost stolen before her eyes, I'm even more fearful now. I am usually very cautious if I'm walking Rio alone, but now I think I will wait until my DH can walk with us. I'm just so scared - Rio is our baby, our love of our life. :( |
Yes i have been asked this many times just say not nearly what he/she is worth |
I will usually answer this question with my own - "why do you want to know?" If they are truly interested in a yorkie the conversation usually continues...if they are just being nosy, I change the subject or excuse myself. |
I have been asked, and sometimes even if I put them off with a joking comment ("too much!"), people persist. I generally counter by telling people what they should expect to pay for a well bred yorkie in this area, followed up by why it's a bad idea to look for a cheap one, etc. It's always an opportunity to educate people. :) Also, if you're concerned about theft, you can always tell people that your dog has an expensive medical condition and/or is fixed - these make the dog less valuable. |
micah - now isn't that the truth, eh? thats the perfect response!! i say that mine is a gift from my hubby, its the kind of question that feels like it leads to judgement and then i feel defensive... |
I never answer when they ask that. I never think that it is any of their business. If they want to know how much they cost, get on the internet! |
Yes, I have been asked that before, but it's not something that happens frequently. (I guess since I'm usually dogless when I meet people, that may have something to do with it.) Actually, the only people I can remember off hand asking that were in-laws...but they are all nosy anyway. They also like to ask questions like how much my house is worth, how much I bought my car for, and how much I make at work. (Nosy gits!) In any event, I just skirt around the question. Ppl usually don't linger on it for long and take the hint without me having to come out and say, "that's really none of your business." |
I am with you on that!! I have had a few ask me that... My responce is... "Enough" then I move on... I figure, hey I did the research so can they!! Quote:

THANK YOU so much for that laugh about the inlaws. You Must love them (I dont like mine, I'll admit it, and I never talk to them) LOL. But again, thanks for the laugh! |
I get asked that alot. I usually tell a fib and say I don't know they were a gift. It scares me because I'm afraid someone wants to steal them for money. |
This happens often - frankly I think it is rude. I always reply with oh you don't want to know and then I smile and try to change the subject. |
Not even my husband knows what I pay! that is my secert to take to the grave...rofl |
Not TOO many have asked me, though it has happened. Most people just say "oh yorkies are expensive huh?" I use that as a time to educate. Just b/c you spend a fortune on one doesn't mean it's worth it. Also if you look for the cheapest one out there, that is also what you're getting. If someone flat out asks how much we paid, we usually lie. |

People asked me before but I usually told them 1/2 the price we've paid for Sandy. Only a couple of our friends know how much we actually paid for him, they think we're crazy! |
