| Aquired a yorkie... Hello, I'm new to this community and I'm copying and pasting this from the great dane site that I'm registered with. I own a 10 month old great dane and here is my issue: Through no fault of it's own, I have aquired a yorki-jack russel mix. Yes, the people that created this pup should be slapped. They gave this dog to my grandmother who is in ill health and "takes care of" my aunt with cerebral palsy. My aunt is very sick now, and she and my grandmother are in the hospital. I couldn't bear the thought of this poor dog living in its crate most of the day so I dog-napped it from my grandmother's house and it is staying here with us until we can find a better arrangement. It is a sweet little dog and my big tough husband is even in love with her. Sumo doesn't really know what to think. He keeps wanting to sniff and play but doesn't realize that his 135 lbs can't rough house with the 3 lbs of pup that she is. All interaction is very closely supervised. I guess I'm just venting because it is a silly situation. How can people be so stupid to give a dog to people that can't even care for themselves? "Disco" is getting shots on Thursday and getting spayed some time soon and then I will be looking for a new home for her. I am just not yorki-savy. The poor thing isn't even potty trained. She's about 4 months old. I'd appreciate any advice about this little sweetheart because I really don't know what I'm doing. Everything I've learned about danes in the past couple of months makes me realize that I don't know too much about the specifics of other breeds. Any particular health concerns or behavioral issues that I should know about the toy breeds? Thanks in advance. Molly |

| She's gonna grow on ya. One thing to definitely keep in mind with her since she's half Yorkie....just as your 135 lb. Dane doesn't know he can't rough house with a 3 pound yorkie, that 3 pound yorkie has no idea that she doesn't weigh 135 pounds. Think ten foot tall and bulletproof, that's the Yorkie attitude. Thank you for taking her in and making sure she's taken care of until she finds her furever home, if she hasn't already |

| Lol, welcome to the world of Yorkies. Four months, house trained?? No way. I stayed at my sisters house in college for a month, and her roommate had lab puppies they kept outside. I'd bring in two of my favorites and they were house trained in a week. So simple to house train them... yet Scruffs I've had for a year is still not house trained. Frustrating, given that I'm doing everything correctly that I know of. Well that's beside the point. It is a good thing you have decided to take her in and re-home her. You could also look towards a rescue for assistance with the re-home. Good luck with everything, and let us know about her progress!!

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! How kind of you to take in this puppy ! If you haven't already become attached you might look to a resue organization in your area to re-home your little one. There is a forum on this site that may help you find one. I am sure one of the YT members here can direct you to one so be sure to check back here. Yorkies do take time to housebreak but it can be done. Our Sophie was housebroken in about 6 months. There is a training site here that can help you with that, too. Good Luck

| Welcome Molly, something tells me you are going to be keeping that little puppy. Honestly I got my Yorkie the same way, a girl who worked for me had bought her and they were not taking care of her. After a week of ownership they asked me to dogsit and guess what!!! 1. 5 years later she is MY dog. Potty training can be tricky, some people have good luck and people like me it took a little longer. I recommend you research crate training and treat training on this site - both worked for me. Also, not sure if you have read a lot on Yorkie Talk yet but it is really important to use a harness when walking you little Yorkie Jack (I learned last week that is what they are called). I would love to see a picture of this little girl. Good Luck. Cheryl

| Several essentials that I recommend......ex-pen, washable piddle pads, Nature's Miracle (or any other high quality enzyme cleaner), loud timer to get up in the middle of the night for a piddle, and an 'eagle's eye'. The general rule is: a puppy can hold its pee one hour for every month old it is. By the way, there are several members here on YT that have Great Danes and Yorkies. ~Joanne~

| Ditto to 4doggiemama. lol Thank you taking in this little one and seeing about her needs. It sounds as though she's burrowing her little furry butt into your hearts already though. Nothing wrong with a 3lber and dane together. Would love to see pics of Disco. She sounds like little doll.

| Thanks for all the quick responses! I'm laughing though because I can tell that Disco has all of your votes... unfortunately this is not her forever home! Yes, we do love her already though! Sumo (the GD) is finally relaxing around her. She was nervous at first but now she tells him to back off as she feels necessary. Will the x-pen be for inside or outside use? Right now we have the two seperated. She is in our foyer/dining/living room where Sumo is already blocked out of. The back yard is fenced in but she doesn't get to go out alone anyway. Also, I can see that potty training won't be as easy as I'd like to imagine. Thanks again for all the advice! I've attached a picture of the intro! |

| I think you are really great for taking Disco in. I'm sure thats it a huge adjustment having a tiny little dog when you are used to a huge dog!! If you are serious about finding a new home for Disco, you are in a great place. The people here on YT love yorkies and I'm sure you can find a great home for her with a YT'er. You may want to post an ad in the section for 'rescue and new homes needed' forum. A couple of things I'd like to mention, per your request for information: 1.) You mentioned a back yard. Please do not let Disco go out unattended. Large hawks and other birds of prey have been know to snatch small dogs for a meal.!! Not to mention, yorkies can easily get hurt. 2.) When you take her out, please put a sweater on her. Yorkies have 'hair' not fur and do not have an undercoat, therefore they get cold very easily. She's only 3 lbs, so she could get very cold, quickly. 3.) Little dog, but huge attitudes as already mentioned. Be vigilant around other dogs and even cats. 4.) Do not put a collar on her, use a harness for walks. Yorkies have lots of issues with their necks, not to mention they are fearless climbers and jumpers. A collar has almost caused quite a few deaths with yorkies. There are tons more I could say, but I'm sure the other yt'ers will have lots of advice for you. Thanks again for all that you are doing for one of our beloved yorkies!! Theresa |
