Welcome Molly, something tells me you are going to be keeping that little puppy. Honestly I got my Yorkie the same way, a girl who worked for me had bought her and they were not taking care of her. After a week of ownership they asked me to dogsit and guess what!!! 1. 5 years later she is MY dog.
Potty training can be tricky, some people have good luck and people like me it took a little longer. I recommend you research crate training and treat training on this site - both worked for me.
Also, not sure if you have read a lot on Yorkie Talk yet but it is really important to use a harness when walking you little Yorkie Jack (I learned last week that is what they are called).
I would love to see a picture of this little girl.
