| Most of the time I don't mind people petting my dogs. I now have two so this doesn't work for me any more but when I used to take Bubba to pet smart, people would ask if they could pet him. I'd tell them, I wouldn't if I were you. He gets car sick and just threw up in the car and really smells bad. They would usually just so, oh and leave.

| I think I am truly going to use " She bites, be careful!" I have never thought of saying something like that. Gen |

| I just wanted to add that I always ask the person if they mind before petting their dog! Never pet before permission

| Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | i usually don't take my dogs out b/c they are to big to go anywhere w/ me, I can't carry them around in my bag or anything like that. but when we go to petsmart or petco for dog food or what ever toy we are looking to get for them, my daughter who is 4 loves to pet the puppies. I have taught her that she needs to ask before she touches the dogs, mind you these dogs range in size from very small to very large she isn't afraid she just wants to be friendly, Its sad that some people assume that all childeren are the same and will just come up to the animal and grab it which ever way they want. Although thinking about it if that happened to me w/ my dog and some little kid came up to them picking them up which ever way or grabing them how ever I would tell them they bite or she doesnt like that, but I dont assume all kids are going to do that I don't mind when we do take out our dogs to the park I let the little kids touch my dogs. I just don't think all kids are evil... I have three of them.

| Agree with Chattiesmom I don't have any issue with people petting Jackson as long as they are polite about it. He's shy with strangers but if I never allowed anyone to pet him, he'd be worse. It's good socialization for him and he's gotten much better with allowing strangers to pet him, slowly but surely. Most people are kind enough to ask me anyways, thankfully. I always tell them "he's shy, pet him under his chin, that's his favorite spot!" Jackson's more comfortable with putting your hand out, palm out and petting him under his chin than a hand coming straight down on top of his head.

| Wow thanks everyone, so many great ideas and hilarious answers. Came back on to check the replies today and wasn't expecting to be so entertained! The eating the fingers one, and the gas and H1N1...Omg too fun. I can't remember them all but I am going to go back and right them down... And the comments about letting people pet our dogs and it becoming a teaching experience... I agree that would be nice to do and if you can do it good for you guys. I have big germ issues and just can't. I see peoples hands approaching and think...they just touch money, came out of a public bathroom, licked there fingers as their ice cream drips and now they are petting my sweet pea that lays on my pillow at night...and i nuzzle my face in her fur too...Now my face has been in that public bathroom who knows where, rubbed all over that money and the person with the ice cream might as well of just given me a big'ol lick across my cheek. If someone touches my dog without fresh clean hands I would have to bath her and she hates her once a week bath as it is, any more wouldn't fair to her. Anyway I love all the help, thanks again everyone! And HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!!

| I don't usually mind if someone asks FIRST! What I can't stand is when people see London and think she's a Chihuahua (sp?) WHAT IN THE WORLD! Kids have actually come out their front door and yelled, "That's a cute Chihuahua" HUH??? One man pulled his truck up to the curb and said " I thought you were walking a squirrel." That was kind of funny. If someone tries to pick her up or pet her without asking I just pick her up quickly. Now, my daughter really HATES it when any stranger touches her dog and she says "don't touch my dog". She sounds very rude, but, hey, it's her dog. And, really, Rory doesn't like strangers anyway so it's not like she is inviting them to pet her. London, on the other hand, LOVES everyone (except my husband for some reason) and doesn't mind being petted. I find that unusual for a puppy mill/shelter dog but she is very curious and friendly. I love these threads! It's so nice to know there are other crazy dog people! Last edited by LondonsMom; 12-31-2009 at 03:36 PM. |

| Was thinking the same. I took the OP's question to mean when she brings the dog out in public. If a dog bites, even if it has been startled/scared, and causes injury, the dog can be declared vicious and subsequently put down. If you don't want the dog pet, best leave her at home. |

Clean, fresh hands or she needs a full bath? Perhaps it's better she stay in the house. Also, Pippi doesn't understand kids. When they come up to me, she gets close to me and I tell the kid, 'gentle, gentle... put your hand out for her to smell'. After this, they can scratch her head | |

| Forgot to add - if the dog is out in public and bites (for whatever reason), a lawsuit (civil suit) may be filed. Saw this first-hand at guess where? The dog park. A kid was being rough to a large dog and in turn, got snapped. The dog will be declared as vicious (Google Joe Namath's trouble happening b/w the UPS man and his yellow lab). Not saying I agree, but some people are just litigious. ![]() |
