I agree for the most part . I am refering to the adults that just assume they have the right to just reach over and start petting her without so much as a glance at me. The same type people who assume it's OK to just reach over and rub a pregnant womans belly ( I had a couple try that too !) ...Those are the types I have a problem with......Kids , I usually let them pet her but I have them be with their parents first and I show them how to be gentle. I can understand a childs excitment but a grown up should show a little more respect.

How could you not notice two boys tossing a football in front of their house? It was so funny though, as soon as they saw Uni they made their way to the sidewalk and you just walked on by. When Kaji saw them approaching, he made a run for the street! He was trying to get away as fast as he could and go hide under a parked car or something.

Exactly. When I have my dogs out in public I try my hardest to make them available for petting, and use every opportunity to educate people about yorkies. However I do tell people that my dogs bite -- If they have teeth, they will bite -- under the right circumstances. I think this is awesome. However, it would not work with Kaji. Kids scare the pee out of him! I had a big scratch that bled a little on my neck to prove it from when we encountered some kids on scooters. Kaji just panicks. What I do like is when people ask, and that allows me to control the situation. Like on Sunday I went to the feed store and in the parking lot a sweet lady approached ooing and aawwing over Kaji and asked. "oh he's a shy boy. You know the best thing we could do for him is let me pick him up. May I?" Of course by now Kaji was under my car's fender. I allowed her to hold him because I agree that it's good for Kaji. It's a learning opportunity for him. A while back a toddler saw Kaji and wanted to pet him so badly. The mom basically held her boy back which allowed me the time to scoop up Kaji, hold him, and bend down to the toddler's level. The mom was so nice showing her baby boy how to gently pet Kaji's back.
However, not all people are this considerate. At the dog park, Kaji was running around with the other dogs minding his own business, when this lady took a liking to him. She chased after him, cornered him, and picked him up against his will. Kaji was in full panick, scratching and trying to get away. I rushed over and said "excuse me, I don't think he wants to be held." To which the lady responded, "he's just so cute and his hair so soft I just had to hold him! Besides, who are you to know what he wants?" my response, "he's my Kaji boy and I'm his mom, that's how I know." THe lady still took her sweet time letting him go. It made me so mad!!!! As long as I can control the situation and turn it into a learning experience for Kaji, I usually don't mind the petting. But I'm also not afraid anymore to say no even if it makes me look like a meanie.

I love when people pet my baby and I love to pet all kinds of animals. However I always ask if it's alright, I never just pet..

You hit the nail on the head when you said "control the situation". I never let my little ones get far enough away from me in public that I cannot control the situation. I don't use public dog parks -- just way too many risks for injury or contracting parasites and/or diseases.

I always warn people not to just reach for him because HE WILL BITE!!! If they are really interested in him I ask them to just stand there for a minute while he sniffs arounds them. Motley will let them know if he wants them to pet or not. It's the same for kids too I always ask them to just stand still for a little bit it seems to calm them and the dog down a little before they just try to grab him.

Well you know I'm not really a kid person, while I noticed the kids, I didn't notice they were coming up to me to pet Uni. I was looking at the house numbers! ah well.

I want strangers to pet my dogs - it helps with socialization and desensitizes them to a variety of situations. I take them to the mall and any place (except dog parks) that will allow them - to get them used to all kinds of sounds and distractions. But I agree, there have to be rules, especially for children (and pushy adults). It's a "teachable moment" that I use to remind children to always ask permission before reaching out to touch a strangers dog.
