| Anyone else use the litterbox... I need help! ok so here is the situation... Alice is pretty good at using the litter box... we have been working with it since day one... but we are at the point were she can be in the whole room were the litter box is and if I keep her in that room she uses it just fine... but when she is in the rest of the house... she will go wherever... (except in our bed room...) most of the time she will go in a room upstairs or in the living room.... My husband is getting really fusterated... I dont want to keep her locked in that room all the time but when she has freedom of the house she doesnt go back to the room with the litterbox... she is about 6 months or so now... so I keep telling him that she is just a baby... but I need help quick because I dont know how much longer the hubby can deal... normally when I find her "mistakes" in the house I dont do anything with her punishment wize... because I feel like if I dont catch her in the act I cant punish her... but if Its still fresh should I rub her nose in it...? I dont know... I have read up on all the litterbox training tips... but im stuck at a standsill... any tips...? I did post this question in the training forum but I always see more people in the General discusion... so I thought I would ask here also...

| When I litterbox train I start off with multiple boxes in different rooms. As the pup grows and develops better bladder control I start to reduce the number of boxes and guide the pup to the main box I want him to use. The key is supervision. Even if you have an accident, that is a learning opportunity to show your dog what is expected. A small puppy is not always able to hold it and run from one end of the house to the other. In your case, I would suggest baby gating off areas and giving your pup less access to your home until she is more reliably trained. Sometimes with potty training you have to take a step back and repeat a process. She is getting the hang of it as you say she is using her box when confined to the one room with it. I hope hubby can remain patient. At 6 months she is still a puppy and learning. Give her time, supervision and continue your training. She'll get it!! |

| I don't feel that it will help if you rub her nose in her own mess. It's a better plan if she never gets the chance to make those messes in the first place. When you have her free in the house she needs to be under your supervision. That way when you catch her having a potty accident, you can get her to her litter box. If your home is fairly large, you may want to consider adding another box or two in a few key areas. Regardless of what you choose to do, I cannot stress enough, at this stage its important to supervise her so that she doesn't get the chance to sneak off into another room to potty. She is not yet reliably trained and cannot have complete freedom yet. Good luck! |

| I didn't use kitty litter in mine. I put newspaper inside of the box and would clean it after the pup went and put new paper in. I have also used puppy pads in the box and that worked well too. I tried the doggy litter and my pup thought it was a great meal so that was the end of that. I never tried cat litter as I was afraid he would eat it. |

I use the box with pads inside. fold it in half and put it in there, then flip over when needed. I started out with a box in every bathroom. Now she just has one. Uni started out with coming home and peeing in the box downstairs, then running upstairs and pooping in the upstairs one. Also keep doors closed to all the bedrooms. When I was training Uni, if I found an accident, even after the fact, I still took her too it, and told her no, and brought her to the pad. i don't really understand why so many people say not to punish if you don't catch them in the act. They know they did it. They know their smell. Also watch the body language, if they put the head down, ears back,, they know they did something wrong. They get it.

| I use blank newsprint in Lulu's litterbox. Then when she goes, I clean it up and put a new paper in it. She usually won't go on one more than once. If you can't have multiple litterboxes, then maybe every half hour to an hour take Alice to the box and tell her to "go potty". Even if she doesn't go but you keep repeating this, she will get the idea that she is supposed to go there no matter where she is. When Lulu would go in the box like she was supposed to, I would praise her and say "good potty" and give her a treat. When she has an accident even if I find it after the fact, I tell her "bad potty" and she knows what this means because she usually hangs her head and goes in another room to sulk. Good Luck!

| Positive reinforcement works much better!! All these suggestions are really good. Chase uses a kitty litter box with very high sides so that when he occasionally lifts his leg it stays inside. This is not an issue with you because you have a girl. We put paper towels inside (no litter) on top we put a metal type grate thingy that holds it down so he can't chew it up. It works really great and when he goes potty I switch the towels, chlorox it and replace the towels. Once a day or every other, we scrub it out in the bathtub using Scrubbing Bubbles. I think that it is important that your husband has a lot of patience and understands that she is just a little baby. She is going to have accidents. When Chase had an accident if I saw him doing it I would say, "No" in a stern voice. It's hard cause he's so darn cute! I found he is extremely food driven and I focused on LOTS OF PRAISE and gave treats EVERY time he went in the litter box. It got to the point that I swear he would force tiny bits of pee out of him so he could get a treat. In my opinion, positive feedback really produces better results then focusing on showing them that they did something wrong. I was his little cheerleader and my husband would laugh at me but it worked! Oh, and when he was peeing I would in a very cheerful voice keep repeating, "Good boy goes pee pee/potty for Mommy!" Baby gates worked great and we used ex pens to keep him put of rooms until he was about 10 months old. Now he roams around but we keep the bedroom and bathroom doors closed. The kitchen is gated as well. Oh--to keep from over treating him, we measure out his meals and give treats from that. Cheerios are super too! Our trainer said that once we were 99% sure he was trained that we could alternate between treats and praise and just verbal praise. By the way, if the smell is "irritating" to your husband it can be taken care of by using the Chlorox Anywhere Spray every time and the daily scrubbing. Either keep several boxes around your home or be vigilant about bringing the one box to whatever room Alice is in. I hope this helps. This information is just what worked for us. I am by no means saying that it is the best/only way but that it worked wonderfully for us. Keep me posted! |

| what type of litter box???? do you just buy the bottom of the box because I am getting a boy next week and I would like to use the litter box and pads. I am afraid if I use litter the cats will get into it. Their boxes are located in the downstairs bathroom. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Maybe explain to your hubby that he is still a puppy. 6 months is still young and still learning. The puppy needs time to adjust, so take it easy, he will eventually pick it up really easily.
