Yorkie Yakker | winter potty place? Ok, this might seem silly, but I am sooo stressed about my little Sophie and how we will cope with her first northern utah winter and going outside to potty. Even when it has rained outside and the grass is wet she is as dainty as a princess and nearly refuses to walk on the lawn. If it is sprinkling she won't go off the deck or the cement unless I hold an umbrella over her head. Seriously. That is just TOO foo-foo even for me! But there is no choice, I have to DRAG her out there and if I carry her out as soon as I put her down she is full out trying to drag ME back to the house. And hubby won't even attempt to take her out if it's raining. Sooo, what do the rest of you do? Not everyone lives in a sunshine state! Do you retrain her for potty pads in the garage so she doesn't have to go outside? And then will that ruin her for going outside in good weather? I cannot fathom that she will step even one tiny toenail into a snow covered lawn to do her duty...PLEASE HELP! before the snow flies!!! |

YT 2000 Club Member | my dogs go outside, rain, hot, snow, windy, and sun .. and they do just fine. I live in upstate NY (by lake ontario) where it gets nasty cold and we get tons of snow. My hubby keeps a small area plowed out for them in the winter and we use jackets/sweaters(some use booties, but my dogs wont where them) when its really cold and make it quick!! oh forgot to add.. you can try to teach her to use the potty pads, that may be the best option for her since she doesnt like to go out much, but she may not want to go out agian to potty.

| lexi does both,, when im working she will go on her pee pad in another room. when im home she does that too, but i also walk her everyday. its good for her to know if she cant do her business outsided, she can always go inside. even in the middle of the night if she has to go potty, she knows where to go.

My friend has her yorkie trained to go outside, but she says when it rains he will not go outside so she just puts the potty pads in the garage..she said it works and once the rain is over he is fine to go back outside!! Do you have like a covered patio or something you can put the pad out there so she is still "going pee outside"

Oh boy, do I feel your pain. My Fancy is the same way. If the grass is wet from dew or if it has rained she won't go on the grass - she has peed & pooped on the sidewalk & in the drive-way just so she does not have to set foot on the wet grass. Fancy was first potty trained to use potty pads in the laundry room but hubby hated that so over the summer I potty trained her to go outside. But I'm either going to have to buy booties or make sure there is a place on the patio to lay down a potty pad or something. We have had a wet ending to summer and wet beginning to fall so I'm sure we are in for a wet winter here in Oklahoma...

Yorkie Yakker | You guys are awesome. I love the idea of the potty pads on the deck altho it will still be windy and snowy and cold so I am not sure it will work. She doesn't even want to go for a walk if the wind is blowing, even a warm wind! I take her anyway, but she turns and looks at me like I'm nuts and when it's time to go back, she is awfully happy about it and wants us to run. I bought her a couple sweaters the other day and she's had them on the last three mornings when iI take her out at six am. She doesn't like them and rips them off the moment we are back in the house, but then she shivers and whimpers for me to hold her while I'm doing the before work rituals. She gets cold very easy and wants to snuggle. The pads in the house might work. I hadn't thot of that either. When we were training her she would go to the downstairs bathroom to do her duty (when we weren't smart enuf to interpret her need/or responding to her request to go out) and since we are empty nesters and only use that bathroom when we have out of town guests, we could probably get away with pads in there and then NOBODY would have to be cold, even in the garage. Except that's kindof disgusting, isn't it? I've never used those. Do you change those pads after every potty? Doesn't that get kindof spendy? And if you let them use it several times a day does it get smelly? In the garage I guess it wouldn't matter much if it stinks, but in the house? |

| Peanut is pad trained.. I have this little cubby hole I put his in that in by the kitchen kinda under this desk we dont use so it works! And it has tile under neath it.. I get my pads from petsmart they are the natures miracle ones.. they are in a white bag with a black and white dog on it and red writting. The pads are white with a green trim, they are suppose to be like grass..have the grass smell.. they smell like nothing to me. I have never came home and smelt his pads even when their is a lot of pee on there. I change his pads when I wouldnt want to walk on there lol. I would say I can get like 7 spots of pee on his pad then I will change them. If you do use pads try to put it somewhere where you have tile and where she is kind hidden but you can still see her..

| i buy the pee pads on ebay usually in bulk,, sometimes i get irregular ones. i just put them inside the pad tray and newspaper under that. it works for me. lexi pees like 3 times on the pad before i throw it out..it depends how big the pee pee is.. usuall when the pad is filled its done .. thats usually 3 pees. and its usually done in one night or one day. she never pees in the same spot, so i have to get rid of it or she will pee on the floor,, it has happened. In the winter months i let her out on the deck where there is a pad also in the tray.. this is so i dont have to freeeze my butt off and walk her again and again...

| This is funny. I just posted something about training our little guy to do both in the training section. He is only 9 weeks old so I'm not sure I should introduce the pad to him yet. I don't want to confuse him. I like the idea about putting the pad in the garage, maybe that will keep him from peeing on everything inside. What is a good age to introduce the pee pad? |

| Hi, your baby is so cute!!. I know how you feel about the "fou fou" syndrome!!, my Chloe hasn't gone 1 or 2 outside E V E R!! , when I walk her she is constantly trying to get me to pick her up, so all I'm doing is basically parading her around for everyone to "ooohhh and aawww" for her. I thankfully have gotten her trained on her pee-pee pads, and she's very good about doing her business there. I have 3 in different areas of my apartment, so she can have easy access and make less mistakes. I have tried the target brand pads as well as a walmart brand (i can't remember the name) and they work great!. I have to say that there is one brand she didn't like at all!, and that's the arm and hammer one. I think it smells too strong of soap or baking soda, but she has not once used those, so I wasted $20 on that pack!!. Another option might be to make her a little litter box-type pen, with some ply-wood, line it with either contractor garbage bag. staple it onto the wood, and top it with astro-turf. you can easily clean it in your tub (hose the astroturf down) and wipe clean any pee that seeped through onto the bag below. I'm very hands-on so I'm hoping this idea helps. I saw one already made but sold for over $200!!, so I think being bob the builder for a chance will save you big bucks and your baby's tush from freezing!....that's something Chloe and I don't have to worry about, we live in Miami, FL!.....god it's HOT here!! Good luck! ^_^ |

| Last fall I was all worried about how Piper would handle a New England winter. She also hated the rain and I would have to keep an umbrella over her while she looked for that perfect spot to go potty. She hates the cold and will shiver and give you those big soulful brown eyes so you'll know she is miserable. But once winter arrived I was amazed how well she handled it. As long as I shoveled her potty area and put a nice warm winter jacket on her she coped just fine. She did learn to go out and do her business quickly.

Yorkie Yakker | That gives me hope that little Piper learned to do things quickly and that you use an umbrella too! I feel like such a geek! I'm thinking my neighbors must think I've gone over to the basket bunch! And maybe I am not giving my little angel enuf credit. She is such a sweet little momma- pleaser she will probably be just fine. It's just been so chilly out the last few days and she curls in a tight little ball and shivers or whimpers for me to cuddle her to keep her warm...me o my...the thots of below zero weather have me whimpering too! |
