Since a dog is property, yes vets have put down heathly dogs based on the instructions of the owners. I am not saying all of them but I do know of a case (actual it was posted on YT) where soimeone dropped off a dog to a vet to euthanize the animal...the vet took the dog..turned around and gave it to someone else. The original owners found out and sued the vet and the vet had to pay. I also know about dogs that were dropped off at animal control in Tucson to be euthanized (they were getting older, or they did not want to pay for medicine etc) and the vet would call me and sneak them out the back door to rescue...

I am not saying any of these situations were puppies but I guess in my mind a healthy dog is a healthy dog and it goes on all the time.

I have posted about this practice before and was :flamed: for doing so. No one wanted to believe it. But it was another time, and for show breeders, this was their life, their entire reputation was at stake.

I doubt that anyone practices this today, and certainly no vet would do it.

I believe most vets try to get the pet owner to sign them over to the vet. I was at my vets office one day and someone brought in a young 9 month old pitt bull mix.

Our city has banned pitt bulls. The woman said her son bought it, supposedly, not knowing it was a pitt bull mix, but as it grew older it was obvious that it had pitt bull in it.

So she wanted it PTS. the vet convinced her to sign it over to him so he could send it to a pitt bull rescue.

You are so right on that. They are the same dog, yet many people here on YT will accept the Biewer and not the Parti, because the Biewers have a club, "several of them" and have a standard.

The registries in Germany allowed them to start a new breed based on color alone. they AKC does not allow it.

That does not make them a different dog, just a different country with different rules.

Yes, the breeders still take miiss marked puppies to be euthanized at the vets.
White boxers and I forget the color of the collies that are put down all the time. My sister (a vet tech), once took three of the white boxer puppies home and raised them from a few days old, two of which unfortunatley died from parvo before they were 8 weeks old, but Joey lived a long, healthy life!

i agree this still goes on, my sonny , i had to fight for him his mum eat his whole foot off and this byb never knew,and he said "if i had seen that no one would have ever got to see him" suppose i cant complain about him because he ended up giving my money back and the pup phew!! sonny is so happy and so loving and enjoys life to the full

I heard the favorite methods was to put the pups in a freezer and let them freeze to death.
They would then dispose of the body and never let anyone know.

This is also a question that I brought up when I was just a green newbie and was "flamed" for even suggesting that anyone would do this. I read it in a book and asked if it was done and was accused of having done it myself, even though at that point I was not a breeder.

It probably is not as cruel as it seems. a mother will push an unhealthy pup away and it will die from hypothermia very rapidly. So to put them in the freezer would just hasten the death.

If you had a puppy born with an open skull and it was screaming in pain, the freezer would actually be a kinder choice than to drive it to a pet ER tio have it PTS.

And NO I have not done this, I have been fortunate enough to never have to euthanize a puppy.
