YT Addict | 2 steps forward and 4 steps back????? Why does Harley keep regressing on his potty training? It has probably been about 3 weeks and he has been doing great with no accidents. He either uses his pee pads or goes outside. All of a sudden yesterday he starts peeing on my carpet again. Between yesterday evening and this morning I have cleaned up about 6-7 "accidents". He has done this several times...will go weeks with no accidents and then all of a sudden he forgets where he is suppose to go????? He holds it all night when he is in his crate (but not if he sleeps with me) and I work 8 hours during the day and he holds it all day. I am so frustrated because I know he can do it. This morning I let him out of his crate and went to get his leash (he knew he was going out) and he peed on the carpet right in front of me. I am at my wits end....every time we take 2 steps forward..we take 4 steps back???? |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | How old is Harley? I have Cosmo now and he is going to be 6 months old 9/2. He is completely x-pened while I'm at work, sleep crate at night in my room and our entire outside area of the kitchen is blocked off with plywood - a lot cheaper than the baby gates since I would need 3. Cosmo is being trained for outside and then on potty pads while in the x-pen while at work. He is doing well - some weeks no accidents and some days a few but he is still a baby. I am hoping that by 8-12 months we should get this down to a science. Yorkies are hard to train - not in the 2-3 week period like some other dogs. One piece of advice when you take him out in the morning right from his crate...I let Cosmo out on his own and then I pick him up and take him outside. There is no way he is going to make it after holding it all night coming out of the crate upstairs in our room, going downstairs, through the living room, family room to our patio door. That way if you pick him up right from the crate and take him outside you should not have any accidents. Also I use clicker training to help so when he does potty outside I click and treat..works pretty good but since he is young I know he will have some accidents but I see that the accidents are getting far and few in between. Have patience..it will happen. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sadie has days like that, she's not old enough to have months of good behavior, but she'll have 2-3 days of no accidents and then she'll have one... i agree with previous post about picking pup up to go out in the morning, too long of a night to hold it while waiting on a leash, get the leash before you are ready to take pup outside to avoid accidents... hubbie set Sadie down to go get pants and she peed on the floor, they just have to GO and GO BAD when they wake up from long sleep, no time to go get supplies, just rush her out the door right away... hopefully it's not a bladder infection that causes accidents and regression, but probably just had a small lapse in your consistency that causes a few accidents now and then...if you are very consistent then it might be something else...not sure

| I've had this problem with Moses since I got him at 10 months. I swear it takes him 10 minutes after he gets outside to do anything. He has to stand around forever before he will start the "pee" walk. I've actually stood with him for 20 minutes, gave up, took him in and he peed on the rug. Grrr... I try to be consistent. First thing in the morning, you'd think after sleeping all night, he'd have to go bad. Nope, just stands looking around FOREVER before he either goes or I give up and take him in. (then he goes). He has access to pee pads, but of course prefers throw rugs or carpet. He and Isabel are in a restricted area during the day, and they go out as soon as somebody gets home. He just won't go. By the way, I block off my doorways with those adjustable window screens you can buy at Walmart. They are so much easier to use than gates and much less expensive. They do not try to jump over them and they just slid together for easier storage when not in use. |

| 2 steps forward and 4 steps back Izzy Princess, Sounds like you're great at training dogs. Tucker was so well trained to his pee pads before his surgery. Now, it's all gone to the dogs. He still uses the pee pads, but he is marking furniture. I thought it was just my husbands chair, but I noticed he had marked a table leg in the living room. Part of the problem is that he needs to be neutered. I hope it's not too late. Hi AAI surgery at 6 mos kept us from neutering at that time. Then I felt after his long recovery from that, he needed a break. Now, we're going to be gone for couple of weeks. I don't want his caretaker to have to bother with a dog that's just healing from surgery. I'm going to check our local pet store to see if they have belly bands. Tucker's Mom |

| I tell him to go potty, I praise him after he potties, I "make" him watch Izzy and Homer potty, it does no good. I have had yorkies for 7 years, you mention potty to them, they run to the door and they drop and go. He knows the word, when I say potty, he runs to the door and goes out and then doesn't go. He is the most aggravating, yet sweetest, dog I have ever had. He just doesn't want to go. And he drinks what I would consider normally. So, I don't know. We'll keep working, he's only 1, so maybe as time goes on.... |

| Play outside Quote:
do you play with him after he goes potty? i've read that sometimes they will hold it outside until you play with them because they don't want to go inside yet...sometimes when Sadie takes too long in her little pen to go pee, i'll let her out into the bigger yard to play with her and usually she'll pee out there during our play time...she's pretty good about going on command, but sometimes she just wants to play first.

| Aw, I'm sorry! I know how frustrating that can be, as Pixel had MANY regressions before finally getting it (and I say that with a knock on wood LOL). I wish I knew the magic words to help you, but I'm not even sure what finally made it click for Pixel. I do have a question for you sherile47 though. What are the adjustable window screens you referred to? Do you have a link you can show me? I just searched at Wal-Mart's website and can't find them. |

| I know for a fact unless you do a big shampoo to your carpet you will never clean away all his accidents meaniung he can still smell them and he gets attracted to your carpet?? just a suggestion. I have carpet as well and they are the worst thing in the world. When ever we go to the in laws she thinks their carpet is a big pee pad
