| Is this what you call "Backyard Breeding"?? So I have a friend in the neighborhood who bought a female yorkie. She wanted to breed it to make back the money she spent to buy her. So she does not want to spend ANY money on a stud service so she agrees to give stud owner pick of the litter instead. Her dog gets pregnant and has only two pups. Friend is upset because she wants a big litter obviously for the money. Her dog has one male and one female and of coarse the stud service takes the female. She then hears that the more they get pregnant the bigger the litters get. She can't wait for the next heat cycle! She has dollar signs in her eyes. Next pregnancy she paid the stud service. She is so excited because she thinks her dog looks much bigger so there must be a lot of pups in there! I told her to go get the dog x-rayed so they know how many there are and they will know when she is done birthing. She cannot bring herself to spend ANY money! She never does the x-rays. Dog starts to give birth and out come three dogs. What she doesn't know is that her dog continues to be in a hard labor all night long with a last pup that is coming out breech! She just thought the dog was done and they went to bed. In the morning she sees her dog with a little leg sticking out. Again, she will not spend ANY money on the dog and she is afraid if she takes the dog in, it will need a c-section and she will not pay for it. So they pull the baby out. It has long died and my friend is upset because it was a female pup which could have sold for more! I just feel like her dog is just a money making machine. It breaks my heart. When I had my dog spayed she thought I was nuts! She said it is the easiest way to make money and I am so dumb to not do it. I wish this kind of thing was illigal. The snarky side of me kind of wishes she has a hard time selling them so she might learn her lesson. I know that is horrible to wish, but it has been bugging me I don't know much about the breeding business, but I think what she is doing is called backyard breeding? What do you all think? |

Thor's Human Donating Member | I think that is awful, and YES, that sounds like the definition of a BYB. That makes me so sad for her dog. I was talking to a cab driver the other day, and he said he had three dogs, one of whom had NINETEEN puppies in one year!! He said that after that, they got her spayed. Um, yeah! I feel like people love their animals and we shouldn't need laws because we should all just be able to use our common sense... and then I hear stories like these, and I wonder. Sigh.

| Shameful that's what I think! Sounds like BYB in the worst possible sense. I feel so bad for her little female and any puppies, as they are not getting good care. This must be very hard for you to stomach trying to get her to understand and all she cares about is money, so sad. |

| This post made me sick to my stomach! I have a female yorkie and had her spayed at six months. I would never even dream of attempting to breed her. Leave it to the experts that know what they are doing!!

| I think it is disgusting. A yorkie is like a little human being. What a shame that people are so callous!! When you have babies (adults) you care for them. Breed responsiby to better the breed and as a passion, not as a money factory. Most of us that breed yorkies spend a fortune and there aren't a whole lot of profits if any (depending on the expense) but we love it and that is why we do it. I built a huge lanai for ours w/ furniture, a nursery in the house, and are now working on a playroom in the house. There is not much more enjoyable than seeing the babies running around and playing with different toys! |

| I had a co-worker who wanted to breed her maltese "to get her money back". I said "no way for me - I don't have the first clue how to do it. If you can't afford the dog in the first place, then you should'nt have gotten it." After two heat cycles - she decided it wasn't for her, too.

| This makes me sick to my stomach! What a poor sweet little yorkie that she is not only using, but abusing.

| When I read the part about the leg sticking out I automatically swinched my eyes closed. This is "Disgusting BYB". If she continues this practice, her little girl might die and she will be left with puppies to care for, or she might lose them all. She might actually be forced to spend some money. I just despise people like this. It's a good thing she isn't my neighbor.
