Being that you got him at such a young age, really he should be just being weaned on to food. He's chewing alot because he's teething. Go easy on the potty training, he's just a baby....don't expect too much from him.

As far as taking him outside, i'd wait until he gets his next distemper vaccine and then only take him outside in your backyard to potty if you are trying to train him to go outside. Do not take him for walks yet or bring him around other dogs (unless they are friends or family dogs who you know are up to date on all vaccines). You puppy is very young and suseptible to diseases. Also since he's so young i wouldn't put flea medication on him yet. wait a few more weeks. Since he's not going outside he shouldn't get fleas but if you notice them you can bath him. A lot of people here use Minksheen shampoo ( i used to too) and it does work to keep fleas off them. its not a chemical flea shampoo but has natural bug repellents in it.

But, your right this puppy had his vaccinations way to young and the puppy shouldn't be around other dogs or taken out in public. Speak to your vet about flea medication. I found a couple of fleas on one of pups when they were about 7 weeks of age. The vet said it was fine to administer 1/2 a tube of Frontline. But, to monitor for any adverse reaction. I only left it on 24 hours and then bathed them. Another thing to bathe him in (it kills fleas instandly) is Original Dawn Dish Soap.

Is 6 1/2 weeks still to early? Thanks for the other tips. I had my GF's yorki over last week and he had some flee's that really why i was concerned with that. His belly doesnt look like its that big. It just looks like he eats a little more than usual. I think he's just fat lol. All her dogs were over weight some. Her adult yorki had a belly and so did all the puppys. She had a bugal that looked like a pot belly pig lol. she free feeds them, I bet the animals fight over food thinking that once its gone its gone. What about fruit? Can i feed him any, if so what kind? And if its to early to feed it to him now, let me know. | |

I don't feed fruits but others here do and can probably give you examples of what they feed. I do give carrots and green beans every so often tho. great healthy snacks.

Don't be adding to much to his diet. Feed him a good puppy food. You'll have to start his vaccinations all over again. By giving him his vaccine at the age he got it, all it did was supress the immunities that he got from his mother. So, be very careful. Keep him away from public places. Shots should be given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. With the rabies at about 6 or 7 months. Have your vet do a fecal exam. Don't worry about his being fat right now....he needs all the nutrition he can get right now. He's a baby. Be careful not to let him over play or be over handled.

| Now when I lived in Texas this what I did. Once my mother whelped and pups were 2 weeks of age, I put her back on heartworm meds. Instant deworming, ingested through mother's milk. But, since I no longer live in the land of mosquitoes....I take in a collective fecal at 2 weeks of age. But, then from the time my dam is bred, I do everything I can to keep her confined in clean quarters. I don't allow her on to dirt.

| Please remember, his tummy is very small and tender, pls do not feed him anything but puppy food at this age. Yes way to young to be away from his mommy and others in the litter, he needs to have playmates at that age. 6 weeks to 7 is fine for bigger dogs, not yorkies. Congrats on getting him, and just read all you can about them please. I am happy to hear you are seaking out information, that is a sign of good home. May he be with you for a long long time. |
