| 6 Months...Questions Hi all. It's been quite a while since I've been around here. Bailey is 6 months old now, and it's funny how some of the issues I worried about at first are gone, but there's just always new problems to deal with. I have a few questions, so any of them you can help with would be great... 1. What age do puppies usually lose their teeth? I have been expecting it for a long time, but never saw any teeth until last week, when I caught Bailey chewing on one. Now that's another one of my problems. She'll eat anything/everything and she gets very aggressive when I try to take away something she shouldn't have. It's funny because I was so careful that she didn't get food aggression. She never acts that way with her dry/wet food, but she will with bully sticks or paper towels or other things she picks up. Anyway, I've caught her chewing on 2-3 more teeth since then and I'm pretty sure she's probably swallowed most of them. Could this hurt her? 2. What age is the best to get her spayed? I hope to avoid her first heat. What is the age range of that happening? (And I'm sure at the same time she gets spayed she'll need teeth removal and microchipping. She also still needs her rabies.) 3. Is there anything I can do to help her get over putting everything in her mouth (as I touched on in #1)? If I drop *anything* I have to be super fast to get it before her. It can be dangerous as she is underfoot a lot when I'm cooking and I'm afraid she'll get something she shouldn't have. Plus she's eaten pieces of paper towel because she seems to think they're some kind of prize. Is she just going to grow up and realize these things don't taste good or do I need to do something to discipline her? And if so, I get worried because of #4... 4. Again, she gets so aggressive about things in her mouth, but not regular food. This started more recently with her bully sticks. I usually don't let her have them for too long, and all of a sudden when I would go to get it from her she would run away. I have chased her around for like 5-10 minutes before. Then when I catch her and get my hand anywhere near her mouth she starts to growl. Bully sticks are pretty easy for me to grab and get away from her, but when it comes to smaller things she has IN her mouth that she shouldn't, like paper or wads of cat hair (I told you, this dog eats anything) she'll nip at me if I get my hand near. And this is not at all like puppy playful nipping. She acts like she wants to bite my fingers off! Very scary for thinking of guests being around her, etc. Another problem with this whole scenario is I'm afraid I might have rewarded the behavior in a way. When she has something bad I really don't want her to swallow, sometimes the only way to get her to drop it is to offer her a treat. She'll drop what she has to eat the treat. How to I reverse this behavior?? This ended up much longer than I planned, but any help is appreciated.

| I never noticed Lacis teeth falling out either but they did, Im not sure exactly when , the few remaining were removed when she was spayed at just about 6.5 months old. I have put my hands in my dogs mouth since she was little and always made it a point to hand feed her here and there, she would never growl at me so I have no suggestions for that, Im sure someone else will come along with answers , however if it did happend I would NOT give her bullysticks anymore. I would say to make her spay appointment soon, I know my vet suggested 6 months old to spay her. As far as eating everything, Laci eats everything, bugs , grass, paper towels and she is constantly stealing stuff out of my purse... reciepts, money , etc.. her favorite is ants.. she could spend hours finding and eating ants..I just constantly remove and replace it with something she can chew on.. I guess its just the puppy stage and they do or I hope they do outgrow that phase

| lets see how much help i can give: 1 - do not worry about her swallowing her own teeth, i never heard it would hurt and most of us never find their lost teeth anyways, odds are that they swallowed it ... lost it... we vacuumed it... 2- heat can happen anywhere between 7 to 12 months... 16 months... since we never know and it is better to be sure than to be sorry , i always recommended the spay at 6 months for our adoptive families. Everyone seems to be very happy and i never was reported otherwise. they can give rabies right there and they will remove any retained baby teeth at this age. You should be fine. 3- bully sticks- not the first time i heard they trigger aggressive behavior. Vets DO NOT RECOMMEND them. I do not either. my fear also is swallowing a piece and that may cause "intussuception" ( i may have spelled that wrong...) and blockage of the intestines... very serious condition that need emergency intervention by surgery and can lead to death! No bully sticks, rawhide, pig ears.... none of that, plenty of rope toys!!! squeaky toys... you will find substitutes. 4- trading a bad thing for a good thing ( treat) is not the best training method! Show her you are the boss!!! do not show fear !!! She is not able to hurt youy and you need to stop the bad behavior while you can !!! XOXO Good Luck !!!

| 1. If her teeth are coming out she can be swallowing them or they are getting vacuumed up 2. Heat can start anywhere from 6 months old- smaller females takes longer. 3. When something falls I would leave it, let her try to get it (only if you know its not going to hurt her) then I would make a loud noise to startle her and tap her on the nose. Keep doing this and she will be too afraid to get into things that are not given to her (kinda like children get scared with its 'hot'). 4. I would try holding onto the bully stick and first act like you are eating it, making her stay away until you (the pack leader) gives it to her. I would also not completely give it to her I would hold it and then pet her to get her used to hands being near while chewing and just stay calm. I also wanted to say with regards to her teeth and heat. I would take her in to your vet immediately because she could go into heat at any point in time- I also would also have him look at her teeth and see if any are coming in and ones that arent falling out. Good luck!

| WOW-You pretty much just described my 7 mo. old Sophie. She get ahold of paper..chews it to shreds..ants, I hate the thought of those live ants crawling around in her ugh . I always hope this too shall "pass". I have probably spent hours by now chasing her to retrieve some object. I too have broken the rules occasionally to get a paper clip that fell on floor by giving her a treat instead. Sophie is not aggressive. If and when I eventually catch up to her she gives it up. She used to always come when called (always had a treat for her) but now sometimes she just looks at me as if to say "um-I don't think so." Hopefully she will outgrow this challenging stage soon. She is a good and loving puppy dog most of the time. I had her spayed at 5 months and had her 3 remaining baby teeth pulled at the same time because her permanent teeth were coming in crowded. |

| Thanks everyone! I will need to work with her on dropped items and the aggression. I'm not all that fond of bully sticks in the first place. I haven't given her the regular ones that cause the aggression for a while now. The curly ones don't seem to cause it and I give her those while I'm in the shower. Bailey is pretty tiny. I'm not sure what she weighs now because she hasn't been weighed since 16 weeks, when she was 2.7 lbs. She must weigh more now but she's still just about a foot long. Is it safe for her to be spayed while still so small? And is it safe to do rabies and spay at the same time? Or should there be a couple weeks in between? I know as soon as I make an appointment they'll make me do rabies because the law is 4 months so I'm passed that.

| I found two of Stella's baby molars the same day...after she finished chewing on her pin brush that had fallen on the floor Though she kept trying to steal them back from me...even when they were out of her reach, so I think it's instinctual to swallow them. |

| My yorkie, Lucy, has ripped up my tax return and likes to chew on zippers (ruined my favorite skirt and hoodie) but other than that she's pretty good. If it isn't a treat or her food it seems like she doesn't know what to do with it. A Cheerio fell on the floor and she grabbed it and then ran to her bed. A few minutes later she came out crying and I noticed it was stuck to her lip. Her little brain didn't realize she was suppose to eat it and got freaked out. She did the same thing with a piece of cauliflower that fell on the floor. She just wants to play with it. In response to your question about getting fixed, my friend is a vet and he said that it's easier to have her fixed on or before she is 6 months. That's what I'm planning to do.

All of my yorkies can not have anything with a zipper either... if they find a zipper, they will shred it !!!! They attack the zipper... kkkk i think yorkies are so smart they have a blast tearing zippers... it could also be a learned behavior... As far as spaying/neutering and rabies shot together... it causes no harm. it is very safe. and yes, it is better to get them fixed around or before 6 months of age... by then the vets can also pull off any retained baby teeth. XOXO

| Samantha, who is almost 6 years, still shreds or eats paper, although not as much. She has given new meaning to "the dog ate my homework"! She also would grab anything that dropped on the floor. I quit chasing her when I realized she thought it was a great game. Since then, she has learned to drop when I tell her to... well, most of the time. Sometimes she gets a treat and sometimes not, but she ALWAYS has to sit when she drops. I think of it as having a toddler in the house. She did much better after she had obedience training. Now she mostly gets things for attention. Sometimes she will bring something and wave it at me when I'm reading or on the computer. Such a hoot! Last edited by vlccairo; 07-24-2009 at 02:09 AM. |

| I understand why you give your baby bully sticks and why she growls when you take them away. I have the snootiest yorkie ever, she wont even eat mcdonalds french fries but could probably a million bully sticks. My other baby hides under the entertainment center when he has one. They smell horrible but they must taste pretty darn good!

| My yorkie, Barkley, is in the midst of losing his teeth. Most of them have fallen out just fine. His eye teeth are trying to fall out. One of them is just hanging on and has been for 2 days now. Should I let it go and allow it to fall out on its own or should I help things along? |

| Neutered I have two 6 month old Yorkie brothers and they were just neutered 3 weeks ago. I never went through the heat cycle but one is humping the other will this eventually go away? My boys love it when I drop things on the floor. They pick it up and run. |
