Question for owners with "small" yorkies

Thanks for all the replies. I think I have just getting the last minute mommy worries. I know she will be wonderful and healthy and well taken care of oh and SPOILED!!!

Mine have all followed the growth charts very close. My male Ben, is about 4.5 pounds, sometimes a little less. I have even had people ask if he was a teacup or a minature. I just answer no, he is pretty average for a standard Yorkie.

No one means harm when they ask about them being teacup and I certainly never would take offense. It is just a term like "small" or "little." I know everyone freaks about the term here but that is only because unscrupulous breeders have tried to use the term to make more money and breed low weight dogs. I say if the term is not being used as a sales ploy, don't worry about it. Just nicely telling them "no" my Yorkie is within the standard weight range, is enough. I might even say, "some people call them that when they are small, but there is no official teacup designation." But usually people don't want to know the details, they are just making conversation about a dog they think is adorable.

So, relax. Don't worry or get mad over adjectives whether they be "cute, adorable, teacup, little, small" it just doesn't matter what anyone calls them.....you are going to love this puppy!

IMHO I think some people consider yorkies as a status symbol. I have gotten more "rude" comments from other yorkie owners than from those who have never owned one. I personally no matter how badly bred I thought a persons yorkie was would not insult it. We all love our furbabies and just like our skinbabies to us they are beautiful no matter what. JMO.

i learned to just ignore people

i had miss buffey in home depot with me and this couple came up to me to chat about her because they had a teeny weeny chihuahua with them. well the wife asked me about miss b (was she a yorkie, how much did she weigh, etc) and when i said she was full grown and 3.5lbs she said, "oh, well she is TOO BIG to be a teacup then. she must be a regular yorkie" ... not sure in what universe 3.5lbs is a lot but i just smiled and said she was a yorkie within the standard and politely excused myself

Well it's a good thing you didn't have your mutant monster gianormous Yorkie, Bree with you. They'd of really freaked out.

3 pounds and under is considered 'Teacup' if you like...4 pounds is not that tiny really...the chart is not always accurate..your baby could end up 5-6lbs...you just never know..it was pretty accurate for my Pixie though.
I have a 3lb'er and people always ask if she is a 'Teacup', 'Toy', 'Miniature'...etc etc...I usually respond by saying..'No..she's just a very small Yorkie'..
Not all 'Teacups' come from bad breeders...sometimes the reputable show breeders will get an occasional tiny...My Pixie came from a show breeder..They need a little extra special care and attention..regular small meals to keep up their blood sugar, and constant supervision, there are many hazards when you have a little one, from falling off furniture (never leave unnattended on sofa's bed's etc!) to being stepped on...you have to have your wits about you...they can be hard work!

I would be very interested to see what reference you are basing that designation and weight classification on. I don't think you can say that because there is no official teacup yorkie -- so how can you have a specific weight range for it?

My Laci is 4 and a half pds, people always always ask if she is a teacup, I just say no just a regular "yorkie" , I dont think anyone means to insult by that comment its just a sterotype that people have created!! I honestly dont find it nessesary to correct people because most of them dont really care to know that there is no such thing as a teacup they are just being nice when they see my little puppy....

Sorry so many people have made you feel defensive, I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting a smaller than average yorkies, I just don't think you should breed them! Since you won't be breeding, it's no one else's business. I do think you have to be more careful with a tiny. Yorkies love to run under your feet and the smaller they are the harder it is to you to walk normally. I think you should be very stern about never allowing her to jump off furniture. We have steps by the bed, and Joey has been trained since he was a puppy to use them. He's not a tiny, he's over 5 1/2 pounds, but leg injures are so common. We also have a small bed/stool, by the couch that he has been trained to use for get on and off the couch. At 2 1/2 years his joints are still good, so I believe the stool, and steps have been helpful. I've also read that Yorkies under 4 pounds have more dental problems, and since this is one of a Yorkies weaknesses anyway, dental care is extra important if you want her to keep her teeth. Tinies are more prone to hypoglycemia; so you'll want to read more about the symptoms, don't just feed her Nutri-cal all the time, as this can cause a bout of hypoglycemia. 4lbs is the standard,the standard weight per AKC is between 4 and 7 pounds. I have two yorkies, the 7yr old female is a retired show dog, she fluctuate between 4 and 5 pounds. I also have an 11 month old male puppy, he fluctuates between 3 and 4 pounds. As long as your puppy is healthy that is what is important. People pay premium prices for 4 pound yorkies... enjoy yours. And my two are very rambunctious and fearless, I can't believe how high they can climb and jump!
