Question for owners with "small" yorkies I am going to pick my baby girl up next Saturday and judging by her weight now and the puppy growth chart she will be about 4 lbs. I have been getting a lot of people telling me that I am getting a "teacup" and that is NOT THE CASE!!:mad::mad::mad: My breeder is a very reputable breeder and it just so happened that Roxy is little not "teacup". So does anyone else have a little baby that can help me out and give me some tips on how to handle those comments and also some care tips for the baby. Thanks! By the way I love my breeder and I trust her dearly!! This is not a thread trashing breeders. |
Well Izzy is 2-1/2 and barely 3# and I get that comment all the time - and quite frankly sometimes you can't educate people. But my comeback is: She's not teacup she is within Yorkie standards which is 3-8? not sure if it's 7 or 8. :rolleyes: No such thing as a teacup and leave it at that.:D Good luck with your new baby - hope to see pics. |
Actually any yorkie under 7 pounds is within the standard...there is no lower limit. After years of explaining to people who weren't really interested in listening...I usually just ignore them. As a side note...that yorkie growth chart is largely inaccurate. |

What is her weight now? The puppy chart is just a guide . Tia weighs 5lb.5oz so not sure that is small or not but by the puppy chart she should have reached between 7 - 8 lbs.My sister has a yorkie and she weighs 8 lb , which is what I though I would be getting but Tia looks small in comparison. Shes almost a year and her weight has been the same for the last couple of months. I get the tea cup comments and it doesn't really bother me as people don't know that it doesn't exist , they hear something and then go with it. Good luck with your baby. |

The general rule of thumb is to triple the 8 week weight...and more accurately double the 12. If this is not a new breeding between the parents...your breeder can probably give you a better guess-estimate of her adult weight. Personally I know several people with 4 pound range, I don't consider them "teacups". |

you could either ignore the comments about the size of your puppy, or you can take it as an opportunity to educate them. being that there is no such thing as a "teacup" and it being only a made up term describing a very tiny dog , you can tell them that . As long as your new puppy is thriving and healthy, this is what matters. I agree that it is very difficult to estimate full weight and growth of a young puppy. These little guys have surprised us! Sometimes , growing much bigger then the 7lbs range. When thought of only growing to such and such. Have fun with your new puppy. Post pictures when you have her :) |
My little guy was 1.6lbs at 10 weeks which by the chart he should have been around 3 1/2lbs but he now weighs 6.5lbs at 9 months old. He still looks small because he has small features but didn't follow the chart at all. I have two others that never followed the chart either so now I put very little trust in the growth chart. Even looking at the size of the parents you often can't tell. But no matter what size Roxy turns out to be she will be beautiful. Just spend a lot of time giving her love and attention and she will repay you many times over. I know mine have. :D |
there is not to much you can say to people without being rude so you just have to ignore the comment if they ask if she is a teacup say no shes just a small yorkie thats what i say. marley is about 2 1/2 pounds now im hoping he will get to three pounds he is nine months old he was one pounds 4oz i think at 12 weeks old |
We have Laddy 3 1/2 lbs and Lolita 4 lbs. I get that alot. I just tell people a yorkie is a yorkie they are all considered toy dogs be it 2lbs or 20. If they insist otherwise I refer them to YT.:p |
My baby girl is 8 months old and weighs 2 lbs........I get those comments all the time. I also get the comments that she's going to be sick and no dog should be that small. She wasn't meant to be that small, it just happened. Anyway she is wonderful and runs with her brothers who are four times her size. I love her size and sneak her in all kinds of places. |
Gracie Ruth is a skinny, lanky 4 lb'er and I get asked that a lot. I tell them she's just a small Yorkie and usually leave it at that. As shared here, many people really don't want the whole lecture and most truly mean nothing rude by it. If they continue the conversation or ask questions and I have the time I'll stay and chat some with them. You're going to have to perfect that "awww, bless your heart" look that us Southern Ladies use when dealing with people of limited intelligence, :rolleyes: as you are going to hear her referred to as much worse then 'teacup'. |
