In certain breeds that have extremely short legs such as the Basset Hound or Dachshund, patellar luxation is thought to be secondary to the abnormal shape of the femur and tibia. The curvatures of the bones in these breeds work in conjunction with the forces of the quadriceps muscles to displace the patella to the inside. Please do not misunderstand – not all members of these breeds are affected with patellar luxation, only a small portion.

oh boy, reading all this stuff about knees is so scary. My Jemma is 5 months and she has a roach back. But she runs like the devil, with no problems....so far. Does a roach back automatically mean they will get bad knees?

Just tried to look it up and couldn't find an answer...I'll keep looking...You know, I tried finding a Yorkie Show before purchasing the puppies and I couldn't find one....I know it would have helped a great deal...anyone know of any???

What are the symptoms?
Most dogs are middle-aged, with a history of intermittent (on-again-off-again) lameness in the affected rear leg(s). An affected dog commonly stops and cries out in pain as he is running. The affected leg will be extended rearward, and for a while, the dog is unable to flex it back into the normal position.

Any structural flaws like roach backs, bowed legs, knock knees, etc. will predispose a dog to joint problems later on as it puts abnormal stress on the joints. So many people think the the Yorkie standard is just a beauty contest, but the specifications are really there to insure a physically sound dog.

Yorkies are ranked #4 by the Orthopedic Foundation of America in number of cases of luxating patellas. Your best chance of getting one without LP is to get a puppy from a reputable breeder who has both parents checked for LP's and knows her lines to be free of them generations back. You also have to make sure they don't jump on and off furniture as LP's can also be caused by traumatic injury.

Have you ever thought about breeding? You know, I actually WAS one of those people who viewed shows as a beauty contest but I have to say my perspective has changed completely!!!! I always like to watch the shows on Animal Planet but never thought I'd be a good dog shower...I like spending time on the floor teaching them tricks...anyway, thanks again for the info

I just went thru my emails going back and forth with the breeder and I copied this word for word from one email that she sent to me:

then i mentioned to you that my aunt had a female gorgeous and breeding quality and both her parents little bigger than my litter and they produce puppies on the 6.0 pounds range.

We discussed all this.....I would have paid more money for better quality but I thought I was getting great quality at a discount because of the economy and because she had no expense for the litter because it was her stud....UGGGH!

My Adie's ears were standing up already by the time she was 4 o 5 weeks old and I have seen some HUGE ears on yorkies. I thing you have yourself a pretty little girl yorkie. don't worry about it!
