| Petco or Yellow Pages? I want to take Sully for his first professional grooming and can't decide whether to take him to Petco for $45 or a place I found in the Yellow Pages for $40. Both say they have experience with Yorkies - but how can you tell? I've heard horror stories and I'm really confused. I want to take him in 'cause I don't trust myself to cut his hair - but I don't want to drop him off and end up getting a hack job. Mind you both places have told me they don't allow the owner to stay. |

| I used Petco the first few times Oscar was groomed as a puppy and I was very unhappy. We like to keep him a little shaggy and both times they cut his hair way too short even after we explained what we wanted. We ultimately went with a groomer that our neighbor and several friends recommended and have never had a problem. Do you have friends with small dogs that can give you a recommendation? That's the best way to know if they'll be good with your dog.

| Do you know anyone personally that gets their dog groomed? I would want some referrals. Took Tricksie to a few and they kept her for 6 hours. Finally got my old groomer back, she comes to my home and is done within an hour, $50. Good luck.

| Neither. At the very least you should be able to stand behind glass or watch by camera. We have no way of knowing how in the world they treat the dogs when they are there alone. I just wouldn't do it. There are more understanding groomers out there that will let you watch through a crack in the door or something...

| I have used the same groomer for 25 years so I've been fortunate that I don't have to make that decision on who can I trust with my baby. I do buy my pet supplies at our local Petco. This Petco has glass running across the front of the grooming area. When I go there I always glance over to see who is getting groomed. Does your Petco have the glass front? If so, I don't think they would tell you you can't stand there and watch. If you don't want people looking in you shouldn't put glass across the front.

| If you don't know of anyone else around with a Yorkie to ask for a referral, you could request to see pictures of yorkies they have groomed. Then make sure the groomer you are getting is the one that did the groom in the picture (mistake I made once!). Check out the cleanliness of the facility. Make sure they request proof of vaccines. I was waiting for a groomer at one place (they were going to allow me to stay) and the lady at the desk told a person yes, they could board their dog that was undergoing heartworm treatment. She got off the phone and I said, did you just tell someone they could bring a dog with heartworms here? She said, "well they are on the treatment. They just can't get excited." We left! Bad haircuts will grow out but disease, that's another story!

| Petco or yellow pages I surely would not use them. I can understand that it would be difficult if you were in the same room.

| I use Petco for grooming, but with that said the reason I use Petco is because I prefer the groomer who works there. Paula (the groomer) came recommended by my neighbor after I had a really bad experience with PetSmart. SophieKate came back from PetSmart looking like she was never cut and her toenails were not trimmed at all. PetSmart also schedule her grooming for the next 18 weeks (once every six weeks) which I thought was kind of pushy since I told them when I picked her up that I thought they forgot to trim her. Grooming has been on of the topics I have followed very closely on YorkieTalk since I saw some discussions where the poor dog had been cut by mistake (or by a careless groomer). I really like my groomer now Paula, she always makes a point to come out and greet me and we discuss exactly what I want done with SophieKate. In fact SophieKate is going there tomorrow for a bath and she needs her visor trimmed and her little butt fur/hair cut. Like the others have suggested, get recommendations, observe the groomer if you can and I would also always talk to the person who is grooming before leaving my dog.
