| Jackson is going to drive me NUTS with this! I swear - Jackson is the perfect dog in every way except these few. He's very obedient, does tricks when I ask, (most of the time) listens when called, walks well on a leash, not a huge barker, etc. He's 6 months old. The problem... I live at my mom's house w/ my stepdad, their dog and sister. I'm in college still. He's a great sleeper over here. Will sleep from 10 or 11pm-8am in my bed. Sometimes my moms dog is in my room, sometimes not, either way, he's fine. But I often visit with my dad, stepmom, brother and their dog 45 minutes away. Jackson has been going there since I brought him home at 9 weeks old for days at a time very often. Two times a week usually. I will usually stay a Thurs & Fri night as well as a Sunday & Monday night. And he just will NOT sleep over there at night-time. They have 2 cats over there and he will seriously just sit by the door in my room all night, I can see his eyes closing he's so tired. He won't give up. He barks around 3am wanting to get out. It's getting veryyy annoying considering I spend alot of time over there AND the fact that he is the perfect sleeper at my mom's house. Last night was AWFUL. I took him outside around 10pm, brought him upstairs for bed, he won't settle like normal and just immediately hops off the bed and to the door. So, I let him stay on the floor, I need sleep so I go to sleep. Around 3am, he starts barking so I'm about to get up and he goes and pisses on the floor. He KNOWS better, and NEVER does that. He went and hid under the bed. I took him outside anyways even tho he just peed thinking ok maybe he has to poop so I go downstairs, put him outside, he's out there for a while. I open the door to let him back in and he just sits there and STARES at me and will NOT come in the house. I'm like "Jackson, come." Nothing. I had treats. I go to grab him and runs from me. This is at 3am when I am NOT in the mood. He finally came inside and I picked him up and brought him back inside. I held him down for a bit in the bed, he wasn't fighting too much since he was so tired. Obviously once i fell asleep, he jumped out of my arms. He was up every hour from then on waking me up. It's like... he just doesn't want to miss anything or something. But it's getting frustrating. He's been introduced to both cats many many times. Him & the female cat will sniff each other and be nice to each other and get along. The male cat just hisses at Jackson and runs away even when Jackson is being very calm and nice. So annoying, lol. I think I'm just going to have to put him in a crate at night at my dads house even tho he is definitely going to whine & cry. I'm just going to have to deal because I can't have these sleepless nights of wondering WHY he's not in my bed, what hes doing in my room, barking at the door (cats out there) at 3 and 4am. I'm mostly venting but if anyone has any tips, greatly appreciated! LOL

Thor's Human Donating Member | A crate may be the way to go. You could also try getting him much more exercise when he's over there and see if nature takes it course. For barking there's always pennies in a can. Good luck!

I took him for 3 walks yesterday, each about 15-20 minutes long. Plus, he was running around outside basically ALL day with the other dog. From 9am-6pm. And when I was outside doing stuff outside the fence, I had him on the leash with me wandering the neighborhood saying hi to the other dogs. Pennies in a can works greatly with him. He's not a big barker at all except when it comes to not being able to reach the cats, lol

| LOL, didn't think of that.... was considering buying him some Ambien though.... Grr. I'm hoping it's just him still being a pup. But it's so frustrating, mainly because I KNOW he's such a great sleeper at "home" even though BOTH should be like his homes by now. I think crating him at night is just gonna have to be the way to go over at my dad's house. I guess it wouldn't be a bad thing to get him re-crate trained if he ever needs to sleep in one in the future or if someone else is watching him if I'm away or something.

| Ranger sleeps in bed with us at home (except for now cuz he's in jail) but he does the EXACT same thing as Jackson if we sleep anywhere else. Ryder would be content sleeping in a van by the river!! We would be miserable without his crate. He will settle right down in there and sleep all night. I think you should try it it's only a few nights a week and he and you will be much happier.

| Missy is the first dog that I've had who's used a crate. I think they're awesome. She doesn't sleep in one at night, but she is so comfortable in her crate that I know she would sleep in it with no problems (Mommy's just a suck and makes her sleep in bed with her). I was especially grateful to have her accustomed to the crate when she had to go through 3 surgeries and several vet trips in the last 10 weeks. She was way more at ease before and after surgery hangin' out in her crate. At home, I just leave the door open and she wanders in and out of her crate throughout the day. If I shut the door, she doesn't care! It's her quiet place where she can get away from everyone. She loves it. Anyways, I think you should try a crate!

| I would use a leash to keep him on on the bed and hold it while you sleep. Just keep it long enough to keep him on the bed, he will get tired of trying to get to the door and fall asleep. Tell him "No" in a very firm voice if he barks, they learn and try to please us. Also use a leash when taking him out for potty, no more running away. |

| I agree with all the posters saying use a crate. I wish I continued using a crate cuz Mahina will go crazy with one of my cats. She doesn't like her cuz the cat hisses... so she's learned to chase and bark it. She'll even wake up and bark like crazy in the middle of the night. Oh and when it comes to potty breaks, use a leash. I use a leash with my girl and she knows it's potty time and when she's finished I let her off and she'll play. Unless it's night time of course. Good luck!

| Thanks for all the tips, guys! I was considering trying the leash thing while in bed. That's an idea. I think I'm going to go out and buy him a crate though as well. We did the crate thing for the first month that I had him but he never really liked it at all - did a lot of whining and crying. So I'll just have to re-crate train him, I guess The crate I have now is too small (he grew up to 13 pounds, may have a little more growing to do) so I'll have to buy a new one. I think I may buy a bigger dog one and put a nice big bed in it for him and give him a little more room. I dunno, we'll see. And yep, middle of the night potty breaks will now be on a leash, lol. He does so well during the day with going and coming back in. He was just being a little brat! :P

| We have a crate also that Sophie Kate goes in when we are gone either short trips or overnight (at home she is in the big bed with us). There are many time during the day I catch Sophie Kate hanging out in her crate taking a nap or just getting some quiet time. I have a nice Lamb Wool pad and one of her fleece blankets in there. It is not unusual for me to find one of her treats hidden in the blanket (I guess she might want a snack at some point). Sophie Kate thinks of the crate more as her club house, in fact my neighbor said the only thing missing is her Jonas Brother poster. If the cat goes in her crate oh boy watch out, Sophie will attempt to herd him out.

| I use my soft sided Sherpa bag as my crate for my dogs. When I first got all of them, I'd sleep with my hand inside the crate so they weren't totally alone. Then I'd leave the bag on my bed all night and after a couple of weeks I'd move the bag to the floor beside my bed. Abbi is so small that I put her in the bag and pop it under the covers every night. She sleeps no problem and I unzip and have a snuggle in bed with her every morning. Michele :-) |
