How can I get my girl used to a leash? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Okay, so this is a week for questions....
Like I said in an earlier post, I will be moving soon and it’s just going to be me and Daisy. (The bf is out of here! ) So I will be able to do the things with her that I was never aloud to do. Like take for instance walks, the bf NEVER let me take her outside. He said she was an "inside dog" only. Im sorry but I think that is very cruel! (Yet another reason it’s over!) Every dog should be able to get out and run around. IMO anyways,...I’ve been trying to get Daisy used to walking on a leash. OMG is she stubborn!! Yes she is very very spoiled (oops) and I let her do pretty much whatever she wants. But I really want her to learn to walk on a leash. I don’t even know where to start. I put her on it, and she will just look up at me and sit down. I try to walk and she refuses to move. Im pretty much dragging her. I have yet to try and take her outside (its still pretty cold) so ill just do it around the house. I just don’t know what to do. I tried to use treats but that’s the only time she wants nothing to do with them! Please help!!
Oh, yet another question. How bad is it to change their name? She was five months on the first, she knows Daisy, but the more I look at her, and the more I get to know her personality Daisy just doesn’t fit her. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to put too much on her too soon. The bf was a very controlling person, and now Im able to do the things I wasn’t able to do before maybe Im trying to do too much too soon. What do you think? Sorry this kind of turned into a venting session, but there are a few questions here.

First, good for you getting out of a bad relationship!

Snoopy doesn't mind the leash, but he's not really into going where someone else wants him to, but this is what I've read/been told/am trying.

You might just put it on around the house, and let her get used to the feel of it. Then, get some treats and pick up the leash and get her to walk with you to get the treats. Add a phrase--I'm trying to use 'let's go'. Make it fun! Lots of praise!

Put a very light weight leash on in the house and let her drag it around. Only do this when you can supervise but do it as much as possible. When she gets comfortable dragging it around, pick up the other end and see if she will walk with you. If she stalls, and this sounds mean but it is not, go ahead and drag her a few steps. She will eventually start walking on her own. Reward her with a treat when she gets it right. Consider a very special treat, something she only gets when leash walking, like a piece of cheese or hot dog. Something "nasty good" as my puppy school teacher would say. Good luck!

You probably won't have any trouble getting her to "walk" on the leash when you get her outside. She'll probably be so excited she will run on the leash and you'll have trouble keeping up with her. Best wishes.

Congrats on getting out of a crappy relationship! I'm trying to teach Mia to walk on the leash as well right now and its not going well at all. Great suggestions from the others... I'll have to try them out! Until she gets it tho I guess we will have to stick to our morning drag.... lmao

Cesar Milan had a show on the leash thing. He suggested putting the leash in a place where the pup can see it. Leave it there for a few days. Then move it closer to the pups space. Do that until they walk by it or over it. Then start leaving treats on top of it. Then take the leash and your pup and drape it over their back. give pup a treat. take the clip and a treat put them both in your hand. attach the leash and praise your pup. give treats so they associate the leash with good things.

I hope I remembered that right!

I read somewhere that you can put something like peanut butter on a long wooden spoon so you don't have to bend over as far. Take a couple steps give them a lick and so on an so forth. I have not tried it yet because I want to look into more but thought I would share in case it was something you wanted to try. Good luck with whatever you try and it's good to hear your out of a controlling situation.

I don't really have any suggestions for getting her outside. I don't have that problem with Annie Grace, just the opposite. I think all the posts so far have good advice. I just want to make sure that I get my tuppence in. Please,no collars! Use a harness. That may be your intention anyway, but I'm psychotic when it comes to collars, they're for decoration only. Harnesses are for walking.

I don't think there is any reason not to change her name. It's the sound of your voice, expressing what you want or feel, that makes the difference.

Get someone to help with leash training. They can start her out with you at some distance away. Call her name, & she'll walk to you unaware of the leash. Or you can walk ahead, & she should follow.
