| What about tail docking? I have been reading the breed standard...KUSA's is exactly the same as AKC's...and it calls for a docked tail. As of this coming June, vets in South Africa will be prohibited by law from performing this procedure. I am squeamish about the whole thing...I don't want to put a baby through that kind of pain...but if she turns out to have show potential, not having the tail docked will then pose a problem. How many of you have had your Yorkie's tail docked? Any ideas, suggestions for me in making this decision? I have only a couple of months in which to decide. Thanks

| you don't have to have the tail docked if you don't want to... no one is going to put you in a yorkie jail for not having it docked :P mickey's tail came docked from the breeder edited: i heard that after a certain age you shouldn't dock it because its very painful for the puppy i think this is within weeks after birth or something Last edited by jennzy; 02-02-2009 at 10:17 PM. |

| Missy came to me with her tail already docked. If it would have been my decision, I wouldn't have had it done. I disagree with it because it is unnecessary and only done for cosmetic purposes. If you plan on showing your Yorkie, then I guess you really don't have a choice. I think that I remember reading the tail is docked at 3-5 days of age. Anyways, all just my humble opinion of course.

| I don't know if my breeder is having the tails docked. Like I said, I'm kinda chicken-hearted about having it done, but if she turns out to be show quality and I want to show, a natural tail is a liability. I've tried emailing KUSA to see if they are going to change the standard to accommodate the change in the law, but received no answer. I suspect not, since they ascribe to international breed standards. So what happens if you want to show your dog but can't get the tail docked to conform to standard? (This will be a dilemma for all Yorkie show people in South Africa who get pups after June of this year.)

| I am assuming the same thing, but my emails to KUSA are going unanswered. I have never shown a dog in SA...I'm from the Bay Area...so this is all new ground for me. Things are handled very differently here...breeders register not only the litter, but the individual pups, and must be members of KUSA in order to do so. The breeder has a KUSA ID number and card, but you get your pup without papers!! The papers, which have a three generation pedigree printed on them, are mailed out by KUSA after the breeder registers everybody. I haven't located much info about showing here, so I haven't been able to contact the dog show circuit to ask them, either. The breeder asked me to name her and was I shocked to find that you have a limit of 15 characters and spaces for the name! As I recall, AKC was 30+!

Thor's Human Donating Member | I wonder how long tail docking will be required. From what I understand, it's banned in Europe and now South Africa... I think at some point international standards will have to change, or no one will be able to show yorkies. |

| Hi, The law came in in June 2008. I spoke to my breeder when the law came in and she advised that she will continue to do it hersef. It is just illegal for a vet to do it for you. I personally wouldn't be able to do it. So when and if my two have little ones, they will have long tails. But then again, I wont be showing them and I'd keep all the pups anyway! The lady who grooms my fur butts, has a little one with a long tail, he is very cute.

| Well, if it was June 2008, then I guess the agony of decision is over for me...I could NEVER do such a thing myself and if my vet can't do it, then I guess I just have myself a long-tailed Yorkie!

| Thanks for the info, Joanne. It looks like I am still on the hook...basically I have to choose between causing that baby unnecessary pain or the show ring. I am such a wimp when it comes to this kind of thing, I'm guessing the show ring is going to be out for me! Where are you in SA?

| Hi, I'm in Johannesburg. Maybe you could find out from KUSA who they would recommend to do docking for you.

| I love Mollys undocked tail. I have very strong feelings on the matter so wont say too much, just that if it were a choice of docking and showing, or not docking and not showing, i would go for the latter! |
