| By the neck?! A few days ago I was at a friend's house helping out with something. I got a call from my fiancee that his father had been in an accident. I had Bentley with me and since the hospital was closer to my friend's, she said I could leave him there. I wanted to get to the hospital as fast as I could so I agreed and figured I wouldn't be gone that long. When I got back, I sat down for a cup of coffee and watched as her 10 year old daughter played with Bentley. He roamed near the carpeted area of her apartment and her daughter proceeded to grab him by the scruff or that skin on his neck. He didn't yelp but he squirmed. I asked her not to do it again and she seemed offended. Since he was there for about an hour, I don't know how many times she did it. I know mothers do it to their young but is what she did okay?

| I've seen vets and vet techs do it but I assume that they are more aware of where to place their hands. I do it sometimes but I am only gently pulling and I mostly have them supported underneath. I think it can hurt them if it is not done properly. I would make sure she doesn't do it anymore.

| No way ....would I like a 10 yr old pick up my dog by the neck (scruff or whatever) and then react offended if I'd told her, not to do it. If any dog bites a child as a result of rough handling who do you think will get blamed? Kids need to follow a grown-ups instruction when it comes to animals. especially when they're not even their own! You have every right to be concerned.

| I've seen other people do it with their small dogs but for a small time period like lifting them onto the couch or something.. I just wanted to make sure he wasn't injured & just not yelping!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think on a very young puppy this might be safe, but I wouldn't let a child handle a very young puppy. I know people do this with cats, but I remember reading that as a dog gets heavier or older, it's not safe. You make the rules, some people are always offended when you ask them to do things your way, but with your pets, you make the rules. If in doubt, don't allow it.

| I pick up both of mine that way, from time to time. They are quite used to it, and never complain. I don't hold them that way for long, however, I wouldn't want to risk cutting off their airway.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i pick morgan up by her scruff to pick her up on the couch or bed when i'm laying down. morgan is 4.5lbs and it does not hurt her at all. she is quite used to it. If you know what you are doing then i see no problem with it if the dog is still small. One has to know the proper technique to do this tho, otherwise you +/- the dog will get hurt if the dog is uncomfortable or not restrained properly.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you do not have to worry about cutting off their airway if you are doing it properly. it does not constrict the trachea or harm it in any way since you are scruffing the back of the neck.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I did a quick google on this and only found things that said it was ok up till 3 months. Can any of you link information from a credible source that says that this is safe?

Personally I know when its ok and when its not ok because i'm a vet tech and have the background knowledge. I can not give you a credible internet source because i'm not going to spend the time looking for one (there's so much crap on the internet that i can't be bothered). Bottom line, i guess, is that if you are unsure, then just don't do it. its not an everyday, every time, way of picking up your dog. if done on some breeds you can pop an eye out (shih tzu's, brachycephalic dogs, chihuahuas, etc). now that i think more on it i guess there is more to it for people who just don't know. i have to restrain animals every day and the scruff is a part of the dog and cat that needs to be used in a lot of cases. so to me it just seems like a simple answer. But it is not.

and i've done it to kittens on so many occasions and it seems to work better (a few of them actually started purring when you did that). trying on a puppy... there's just something that doesn't feel natural about it. i'm not sure if it's because there's less skin to grab on the neck or what, but it feels a bit tighter. and me just being me, if he squirmed i'd assume there was something uncomfortable about it. | |

| I think its okay to grab them by the scruff of the neck but not pick them up by it that hurts adult dogs

| As a parent I would have to say no its not right for a 10 yr old child to do this. As the other members pointed out they do it, but it is their babies. Also the vet does it, but this child is a child and she is not old enough to make decision on being a pro at handling animals, also being 10 I would assume she would have better knowledge on how to play, tug or whatever already. If I saw my kids do this to Chino I would so ground them for mistreating him. Because that is what it is when children do this. Mental damage is all I could see coming from this. Your baby might have issues later with children because of her handling of him. So I would watch his behavioral issues. |

| The real answer is No, a 10 year old should never be doing this to a dog of any age But grabbing a puppy ... not a dog by the scruff of the neck is a good tool to use at times depending on how you do it and for what reason mothers will move a puppy from place to place lifting the puppy by the scruff of the neck and dominant members of a pack will bite and grab other pack members there too I grab my puppies there when I have to stop them from doing something Right away ... like chewing on something that can be dangerous or if I need to get something out of their mouths before they swallow it It does freeze them allowing you to stop an activity right away

| Well their Mommas do this, but since Im a skin mom and not trained I would never pick mine up like that and no way should a 10 yr old handle any animal like that. |
