i pick morgan up by her scruff to pick her up on the couch or bed when i'm laying down. morgan is 4.5lbs and it does not hurt her at all. she is quite used to it. If you know what you are doing then i see no problem with it if the dog is still small. One has to know the proper technique to do this tho, otherwise you +/- the dog will get hurt if the dog is uncomfortable or not restrained properly.
