| WOW I very much regret starting this thread!! I certainly did not mean to step on anyone's toes. I love this Forum and have received so much wonderful advice so I would never want to see anyone discouraged or afraid to post regardless of the inquiry. I really meant that it would have to be an OBVIOUS emergency when a vet is required. I am afraid to start any new threads now so I sympathize with those afraid to post. |

I know this seems OT at this point in the thread but since it was mentioned several times I just wanted to clarify. I know it would kill her to come on and read this because her babies are her life- they are her children and she does nothing short of the best for them. Again, no idea who specifically you were referring to but since I thought of my friend right away I'm sure she might think you were referring to her also. ![]() ETA- oops, I obviously didn't read all 8 pages before posting and I see this is being talked about. Off to read like I should have before posting.

| Being a relatively new Yorkie owner myself I can understand why some people post here when their dog is sick and they are not sure if it's an emergency. They just do not know how quickly things can go downhill with puppies or small dogs. Some of the things that I now know would be an emergency ( after reading alot on here) may not have seemed like that to me before. Yes , common sense is required. If my dog is in a serious state of decline such as being badly stepped on , having a seizure etc. I would be on the phone with a vet or driving to clinic ASAP.... I know cost is a factor , especially in today's troubled economy. For some that don't have the up front money to pay and the clinics wont work out payments with them , they may feel this is their best / only option for advice and help. .

| I too knew exactly what the OP was saying...and I agree. It was the subsequent posts that bothered me. And Joan how exactly does a person take a seizing dog to the ER vet without "touching" it??? Sounds like a contradiction to me. Nikki, I think I know who you are talking about, and I for one thought her idea of videoing the episode was brilliant. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, it did help her vet in diagnosing her baby. So, anyway, people...be kind with your words...because others like me can take your comments personally.

| Just because someone states an opposite opinion doesn't mean it's "ridiculous" or anything. It's just an opinion and we all have the right to state it. Sorry, but I'm not going to sit around and agree with everyone else. If I have an opinion on the subject, I'm going to state it. I know personally I didn't say anything wrong but was told that my posts on this subject were nonsense anyways just because it was different from someone else's opinion. I think everyone just needs to learn to be civilized and hear the other side of the story too even if they don't completely agree. That's the beauty of human nature... we're all different and unique in everything including opinions.

A person would be making sure the dog is not near stairs but other than that, is on the phone to the emergency and then get the dog to the vet. Geeeez !! I stated before my opinion and it's mine.I'm going to a super bowl get together in an hour and I'm gonna have a strong drink and I DON'T EVEN DRINK

| Wow, what a hot topic! One that has unfortunately brought out both the best and the worst in some of us. I too like mscat am disabled and live on a fixed income. So, I am careful about taking Molly to the vet as I cannot afford (unnecessary) large vet bills. However, she has had her shots and will be spayed soon. Her spaying I am giving serious thought too only somewhat because of my fear of anything going wrong- like a reaction to the anesthesia as she is small. So, I am deciding on "when", not "if". In the meantime, she is never alone outside so that no accidental mating or anything else can occur. But, I can say that I have learned a lot from everything that I have read on here. Years ago my parent's one miniature schnauzer had problems with colitis; so when he would periodically have that problem, my mom would cook rice and chicken for him to eat. So, I know that rice is good for diarrhea, however, I didn't know that pumpkin was also good for it until I read about it on this site. I also know that cooked eggs are good for dogs too. But, I do have to agree with some of you that I have read some posts where I too wondered what was wrong with them that they didn't at least call a vet's office? There are some people who do seem to lack common sense. Not only with their animals but with human children as well. But, rather than pointing out their faults, whether in a kind fashion or otherwise, I also believe that we shouldn't make people afraid to post either. We would best serve our other yorkie friends, lovers, owners and canines by providing them with an answer to their question. Whether that be by simply advising them to "get thee to a vet posthaste" or an answer to their question if you happen to know the answer or where they can go to find the answer. That being said, I think I will leave well enough alone. |

A member shouldn't judge how another handles emergencies. There are so many caring, helpful people on this forum and many people are directed here for that reason. (I ,personally, have had true emergencies and my instincts led me racing to the ER.) Lets be respectful of other members asking for advice.

| I just wrote a reply to a newbie and told her to stay on Yorkietalk because everything I learned about yorkies was here. It hurts to think people can be so hurtful to each other when I know how much we all love our yorkies and other pets. I did take my pregnant yorkie to my vet and they didn't know anymore about a c-section than I do because the vet that performed c-sections was out of the office. So, yes this site can save babies.
