One of my very first post on here was about one of my babies being sick, No it was not an emergency but i did want to get some opinons and see if anyone else
maybe had the same things happen or knew what i was referring to, I think most know when its a true emergency
but sometimes we come for comfort and support, alot of new members who have never had yorkies before are not sure what to do at times, so they come here and ask for help, Were not going to help if they feel bad for asking they will leave and then what good is will come from that.

Don't be so judgemental...Stop with the name calling...Also, I have considered taping one of Winston "seizures"...it's hard to explain, in words, what he does...but a video would explain it all. Another thing, by the time I got him to that ER vet, the seizure activity would be long over...they would be seeing a dog acting totally normal, in the ER??? What a waste of a valuable ER vets time. Don't get me wrong, if Winston needed an ER vet, he would be seen by one...but having a seizure is not necessarily an "emergency".
Okay, enough said...
Of course you know what is causing your dogs seizure. We are talking about a person who have never had this happen. This is what Global Paws has to say.

Some seizures are followed immediately by another seizure, and these clusters of seizures are called status epilepticus. This condition is a medical emergency and you should take your dog to your vet as soon as possible for aggressive treatment. If you are able to time your dog's seizure and it lasts longer than 5 minutes, you should also take your dog immediately to your vet for care.

Any time your dog has a seizure, you should call your vet or the emergency clinic and describe what you have seen. Your vet will probably ask you about the type of seizure, the length of the seizure and general questions about your dog's history. Depending on the situation, your vet will advise you to bring your dog in immediately or to monitor your dog at home.

Like your dog, most pets that have a seizure seem to recover completely within a relatively short period of time. Even if this is the case, you should consult your veterinarian to determine the cause of the seizures and whether treatment is necessary. If seizures are not controlled, they can become more severe and more frequent.

Once at your vet's office, your vet will probably ask you more questions about your dog's history and will most likely recommend blood work to try to determine the cause of the seizures. If the results of the blood work and other tests show that the seizures are secondary to an underlying metabolic or liver problem, the treatment is directed at correcting the primary problem in order to allow the seizures to resolve on their own.

If your vet determines that the cause of the seizures is a problem inside the brain, such as epilepsy, he or she may choose to start your dog on anticonvulsant therapy. The most common anticonvulsant drug used in veterinary medicine is oral Phenobarbital, usually given once or twice daily. In many cases, Phenobarbital greatly reduces the frequency and severity of seizures in dogs.

I Can't Believe...
how many people post to this forum with medical problems when they should FIRST call their vet. Does anyone else feel this way?
Coming from a fairly "newbie"....NO, I can NOT believe it! Some peoples posts have left me sitting here with my jaw dropped! Not only do they come to the forum before seeing their vet, but sometimes they are posting daysss after the medical issue has come up! This is neglect in my opinion.

I agree with you there, if it has been DAYS, the pet is still ill and they are just now taking thier pets to the vets, then it is neglect.
Most of the newbies that post on here are quite young or first time pet owners and may not now what to do. Thats why they ask. Im sure not one of you while you were young, never asked anyone for help right??? How would you feel if you were told that you were a 'idiot' and had no 'common sense' when all you did was ask a question?? Why is that section even there?? Most of you feel that everyone who post in that section should already no what to do in an emergency and if your pet was sick? Gee, seems to me that its just wasting vaulable space.

I think this thread has gone completely off topic as they sometimes tend to do....I believe the OP was referring to a TRUE emergency. An emergency as in a dog choking or swallowing poison, a dog that is suddenly seizing that has never done it before, a dog that is bleeding from the rear or vomiting blood, a dog that has been unresponsive for days, etc etc. Those need attention now....

We oldsters are clearly not implying that a person should never ask questions or try and get opinions from others who have gone through the same situation. We welcome them and we like to give our experiences. I've seen some very informative info coming from these members.

It's understandable to post first when it appears to be something minor, as in a rash, not eating, a limp, or torn nail, etc.etc. Pretty much use the same common sense we would use as in evaluating the concerns of our children....

I agree with you 100%. In all my time on here folks have always been willing and able to answer question after question by both newbies, not so newbies and even old timers. They don't even get frustrated when it's a question that has been asked in a million other posts but the person rather post the question vs searching. This happens to be a hot as hell topic because time and time again people with seriously real emergencies try to do the webmd or rather the yorkiemd thing than seeking professional help. I know many of the old timers are refusing to post because people want answers but don't really want to listen..so that is why words are thrown and tempers rise. I think as a whole YT is a great place and very educational.

Of course this is just my opinion
but maybe the nasty/unkind comments are coming from people that have seen alot of abused and sick pets due to owner ignorance or neglect...if u are dealing with pets that have been abandoned daily it gives u a different outlook on the situation of someone coming to a blog for information for a sick pet..

Of course in my opinion also,
There seem to be many people getting pets and not knowing much about having a pet at all... just seeing it as cute... not knowing or understanding the responsibility of a pet..this is why it is better to buy from a reputable breeder that will work with the pet owner and also many will take back the pet if the owner has a problem they can not handle...

I have also, noticed since joining this site many people are breeding and actually come on this site to see what they should do when their little one is giving birth...now to me this would be kind of silly ..the breeder should find this out prior to the pet being bred and work with a mentor prior to this situation ...

I guess when we read comments on this site we have to take into consideration where they are coming from before evaluating it ..each one at this site has different opinions and insights and we have to respect those as well ...some may be positive and some may be negative..
but i do think most are made with the best interest for the pets...

Good post. I know that the zealousness that you see on her at times is right on because as a good friend of mine always says..."it's all about the babies and nothing more". The die hard members it's always about the pups and their welfare. So that is why in frustration at times they just can't fathom some of the things that are being or rather not being done.

As a really new newbie, I have not found mean or nasty people here at all. What I have found, are people deeply concerned for the welfare of animals. Animals are not tools in your shed to be fixed once a year. They are living breathing loving creatures given to us to care for. When someone treats them like an object, that is for their benefit, it makes me mad! If your mother was not breathing correctly would you go onto a website to find out info.... or would you take her to the doctor?
If you have to think about this one... you don't need a pet!

I ABSOLUTELY agree!! I wouldn't even go to a vet site. I would go to the vet's office or emergency hospital. Many people have years of experience, on this site, but are not vets. Any suggestion should always be verified by your vet.
