| Whats the best way to introduce a new puppy to my adult yorkie? My wife and I have a 4 year old Yorkie named Sammy that we love dearly. We have considered getting a second dog for a long time and have now found our puppy. Its a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and if all goes well we will be brining her into our home in a couple of weeks. Our main concern at this point is figuring out the best/safest way to introduce a new baby to Sammy who has always been the only dog and who, unfortunately thinks he more of a human than a dog (our fault, I know). When he was just a puppy I was outside playing with him when a Dalmation that was off the leash ran up to him, couldnt stop and ran right over him trampling him in the process. Since then, Sammy has not been crazy about other dogs. At the dog park, once inside the fence, when other dogs approach him he just freezes up and doesnt know how to act. I guess my point is that he is not the most socialized of dogs and I want to be sure we dont have any major problems between him and the new puppy. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robert, Denae and Sammy! |

| I would do it very slowly. Don't just throw them together. Maybe have the new one in a crate and let your older one approach the new one. When your older one is more relaxed, let your new one out. Make sure you ALWAYS give your older one the most attention and ALWAYS do it first. Have lots of treats on hand and praise good behavior. If you cannot supervise them, then do not leave them alone together, because it could get ugly. It'll all work out, just be patient! YOU also have to remain 100% calm and not nervous otherwise your older dog will sense that and react accordingly. If you are calm, firm, and loving, the interaction should go smoother.

| 1. Neutral territory 2. Long walk 3. Constantly watch for the first week or two. Follow those three things and you will be fine.

| Introduce them outside your home. Also, I was told by a breeder, to bath the pup (if old enough to bath) with the shampoo used on the resident dog before introducing them will help.

| I have been bringing pups home for years, I always bring the new one in, set it down and let all the other dogs smell the new one with me right there. I have never had a problem doing this. Within a few minutes, the 11 year old shih tzu is wanting to play with the new pup |

| The thing is, if they bring the new one home and put it down by the other dogs nose for it to smell, unless the other dog is a mean dog, then there shouldn't be a problem. Never just put the pup down and walk away, but, they can see how they interact. I know out of the 22 dogs my family has, we have always all introduced the same way. |
