From what I gathered, her dog isn't mean, just very scared and freezes. I would think a happy puppy might scare the older one to just put him/her in the middle of the room. I don't know, I would probably leave the puppy in the crate first and let the older dog approach the puppy first and use lots of positive reinforcement to show him that the new one isn't going to hurt him. JMO. We did the "put the dog in the middle of the room" thing with Smokey, and I actually wish we would have done it differently BUT Chip is kind of territorial.
