I didn't write it, but I don't think any insult was intended. She said "most" civilized countries have made the practice illegal. I'm guessing she means that tail docking is probably not a hot issue in the Sudan.

No insult intended towards Sudan either! :)

I don't think she meant it like that, afterall she lives in the US too. I think it was just wrongly worded maybe should have been "other civilized countries" instead? Usually the US leads the way in forward thinking and is considered to be one of the most modern superpowers in the world today (certainly more than the UK, least thats the way I see it) yet we along with many other civilized countries have banned this outdated and unnecessary practise. I think the point trying to be made was why has'nt the US made the decision to move with the times? Infact I'm very surprised that it did'nt happen there first. The UK in particular England is still very traditional and seems very old fashioned compared to US in many ways. I find it strange that docking was banned here with all our old English Gentlemen with stiff upper lips stuck in the dark ages and not yet in the US who always seem to beat us to it when its comes to moving forward:rolleyes:

My husband lives in Kent most of the time and I love it there. I'm very tied down here but look forward to visits. There is a strong European influence in my dogs, and their tails. I think you did say it better than I that tail docking is an outdated practice, more than a matter of civility. My household is very international and we think in terms of global trends rather than just US or New England. It was on a trip to Crufts that I decided to discontinue tail docking. It was only at the show itself that I saw docked tails, the final year it was being allowed. On the street I saw not one Yorkies with a docked tail, and it's such a lovely tail I'm still confused as to why anyone ever wanted to cut it off.

I understand how yorkiekist got that interpretation, but I don't think that was what was meant...I just think it was taken the wrong way. THIS TIME. However, it's pretty common for comments condemning the US and those who still dock and seeing comparisons of the US vs European nations when this subject is brought up and sometime they are downright insulting. That being the case, it tends to have people a bit on edge and just waiting to see when it's going to come out whenever this subject it brought up.

As far as why the "good" breeders refrain from posting, I think in many cases, that has more to do with comments made in the Breeders section, not something like this thread. :)

I think there are some people (not all) in the U.S. that are just really worried about how we are viewed at this time with some good reason. It just makes for a much more touchy subject at this time.

I see her words loud and clear, no twisting needed. I think it could have been stated better without making it look like the US is uncivilized. And compared to who? I dont think the practice of tail docking is uncivilized or barbaric if done correctly. And to your post: are you calling me a bad breeder? Or do I need to twist your post to find the true meaning?

Thanks for clarifying! I was hoping you didnt mean we were uncivilized around here! I also would not buy a Yorkie without a docked tail unless it had the bloodlines, bells and whistles I was looking for in my breeding program. I just dont care for tails on Yorkies. I can see the point of the potential buyer in not wanting a tail either. I guess its all in what you get used to.:)

If you read my exact words in the exact order they are written and take them at face value you will see there is no reference whatsoever to your breeding. I know nothing about you or your breeding. I don't spend much time on Yorkietalk, but have over the past year seen breeders who I thought sounded responsible and knowledgeable stop posting and I can't help wondering if these gnat type attacks have something to do with it.

I know a lot of well respected, knowledgeable breeders who have stopped posting too over time. Most of them did so because of the backlash they got for giving honest answers in the breeders section rather than answers that people wanted to hear. Not because of threads like this where the adhereing to the very standard of the breed was being defended. Of course then again, I guess it can be said that we all have a difference of opinion as far as what constitutes a "responsible and knowledgeable" breeder. :)

You're right, Misty. I believe most of the respected breeders have left because they are tired of fighting the losing battle on here. I do appreciate those that have stayed and continue to try!
