I assume that there was a reason for it back when the breed was first established as a ratting dog. BUt Im pretty sure they do it now because its breed standard? Im not an expert but people think it looks better. In germany (I think its germany) They arent allowed to dock an animals tail, And i seen a full lenght tail on a yorkie from germany and it was the cutest thing EVER! lol Very unusual though..

LOL, I've often wondered this myself. If my puppy hadn't already had his tail chopped when we picked him out, I probably would have been happy to leave it long and natural. Lauren & Nikko

Tails have to be docked within a few days off birth, after that its considered a major amputation that requires surgery and other unnescicary pain for the dog. I Asume you plan on keeping the natural tail.

My Coco and Pebbles have docked tails but my Trixie has a full tail. I call her taily girl. I think it's so cute. It goes crazy when she's happy back and forth. I also like my two with docked tails they are so stubby. I hate to think of the pain they went through when it was cut. They came to me that way. Either way I guess. COCO PEBBLES TRIXIE

Caucasian Ovcharkas Have their ears cropped as pups becuase "back in the day" They were used to hunt large animals and protect cattle and other live sstock out in the feilds. They were cropped so that predatoors couldnt garb there ears with there teeth and Pull them to the ground and have a way to manipulate them into surrender. MOst of these dogs now adays Are just used as pets but there ears are still cropped. Why? The look stuck to them, and now it is considered "breed standard" for the dogs ears to be cropped, even though they are in no danger of being dragged to the ground by the ears. Maybe "Back in the day" Yorkies tails were docked to that rats couldnt chew on them? MAybe the people of the mines wanted them to use there tails as "pointer" dogs do? Either way it isnt nesicary these days, they are docked simply for the look.

I watched a documentary on ear cropping and tail docking, it wasnt pretty. I heard the pups screming when they aplied the clamp to dock the tails and it has seriously scarred me for life. I feel so bad that my poor girl went through that to get that little stub on her back. Its quite sad.

Responsible breeders register with the CKC, AKC etc. Therefor they live by the breed standard and breed champion pups. And if tails arent docked, They cant be registered. Beleive me, Keelys breeder dont like it either, BUt she loves the breed and wants to "improve" it. Therefore she has to follow breed standard to acheive her goals
