| Need Urgent advice on Vet diagnosis, Please! (boyfriend using girlfriends account) 1 1/2 yr old yorkie full of life, recently started having soft stools/diarrea. Took her to the first time vet we visited when she was a baby. Took her on Saturday morning and kept her there thru weekend. Monday morning we call and she said it looks like she had a virus for some time? and signs of gall bladder disease? And that the dog had a rough weekend and didnt eat. (To me thats normal, that's the personality of the dog, she is sooo attached to my GF, she goes crazy when she's not around. And of course, if you are in some unknown place, probably in some cage with funky blanket and the good ol nutritious science diet shiat, of course she's gonna have a 'rough weekend'). When I hear virus/gall bladder disease, to me that sounds serious. I can't really feel 100% certain with this vet. She mentioned she want's to keep her there until she stools better and eats normally. The dog was eating fine before going in there. She eats great food and treats, I'm sure in there she's getting a diff brand and we all know what brand is that. My girl left a deposit of 300$..I hate to be blunt but I asked the vet was is this going to cost, leaving her there until her stool is not soft anymore. She said ballpark figure $100 per day. This is what upsets me. In the beginning months of yorkie when I first purchased her, we went there for all the shots. Then came the spaying time. She said she can do it which was like 400$ but said she prefers not to do it and actually referred some place that strictly does spaying. We werent too happy with the place she recommended so decided to stick with her and pay the bigger fee. We called and called to set it up and she simply ignored us, not return phone call. Headed out to the place she orginally recommended. Place was horrible and stenched out. Vet in there look like some evil frankenstein. Cancelled that place and chose a animal hospital in a different city. Now after I hear york has had 'virus' and gall bladder, I asked If I can pick up the puppy for about 2 hours. She said why and I simply told her I wanted to get a 2nd opinion. She immediately got defensive and said if I get a 2nd opinion for me to stay with that doctor. That sounds totally unprofessional to me. This is the way I see it. If she referred us to a spaying place and just 'didnt want to' do the spaying and ignored all of our calls when we wanted her to do the procedure and pay the extra money for a small spay procedure, what makes me think she is competent to handle a gall bladder case, if it escalates to something serious? Will she wait if the york got worse then recommend else somewhere else if she doesn't want to handle procedure? We humans have a right to 2nd opinions, why not our yorkie? This is a LIFE we are talking about. Now I feel the york is hostage in there and if I get a 2nd opinion I can't go back. If something does go wrong in the york, I don't want to curse down the road and wishing I could turn back time to get that 2nd opinion. Am I just talking out of my arse here or not? Anyone had experience with the yorkie and diarreah type stools with occassional blood in it?

| its your dog, you do NOT have to ask the vet what you can do. Walk in take the dog and go to another vet. You have the right instincts, don't let someone tell you what to do.

| In my opinion, if you have any question whatsoever about the validity of the diagnosis, you have every right, and an obligation to the dog, to seek another opinion. If the vet does not agree wholeheartedly, I would find another on asap.

| Please go pick up your girl immediately and never go back. She needs a second opinion. How did this vet diagnose gallbladder disease? Did she offer to let you bring in your pup's regular food to see if she would eat? This vet should be okay with a second opinion. All vets should be comfortable doing spays. I call Ellie's vet and leave voice mails. She returns them and doesn't ignore them. Something is way wrong here and I would not want my dog alone in that place.

| Ok, IMO the place she is in doesn't sound good at all... Where are you located in NJ (North, Central, South) I am from NJ and I can recommend you a GREAT Vet in N. New Jersey. I think you need to get her out of there ASAP Last edited by TLC; 09-29-2008 at 07:19 AM. |

| I would call another vet and make an appointment ... then pickup your little one... they cannot hold her.... I agree that a vet should "value" a second opinion. Best of luck and keep us posted.

| She for sure needs to be seen for a 2nd opinion!! It is crazy that she would say to go with the other vet then. Does this mean that she knows her diagnosis is incorrect? I wouldn't go back to her even if she is right, there is no reason to treat a customer like that!

| If you could recommend N.NJ vet, please do so. After my phone call asking for me to pick her up for a 2nd opinion and her defensive and hanging up quickly... now all of sudden she told my girlfriend I can pick her up at 4pm, she's doing fine. I have a vet I met on a business call, the guy seems super sincere and nice, great vibe. He owns Millburn Vet Hospital & Laser surgery center in millburn NJ. I might head there. Now I'm more confused. Originally she said to keep her there for some days and had some type of virus and gall bladder, now that I asked for 2nd opinion, all of sudden we can pick her up today. I'm wondering if she is really fine, or is the vet pissed I asked to take her for a 2nd opinion and just getting me out of her hair.

| That is the most rediculous thing that I have ever heard. I would definately go pick her up. I would start calling every vet you can find and let them know about your problem, any decent place would tell you to drop them. I would not leave my baby with someone like that. Get her out a.s.a.p! Good luck with everything and im sure you baby will be fine. I will say lots of prayers for you and your little one. |

| Definitely pick your baby up from this vet and if you feel a 2nd opinion is necessary, get it. It sounds like to me, she may have just been milking this visit for all she could get. I may be way off base, but it does sound fishy to me. Why would she not want you to get a 2nd opinion if her dx was factual? Were I in her place, I would welcome some one else verifying my dx. You said she had only loose stools in the beginning, right? Any other symptoms? I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us posted.

| Medically speaking I don't have anything to offer about your little one, but I would definitely look for another vet immediately. If you vet has a problem with it, it is her problem. All professional and etchical doctors would have absolutely no problems with seeking a 2nd opinion. I hope your little one is okay.

| As a nurse, we always encourage our patients to go for a second opinion. Cause if you really are a good doctor....you'll want what is best for your patient. I would definitely go pick up your yorkie and definitely get a second opinion. And while you're at it..i would file a complaint with the NJ Attorney's General's Board of Veterinary Examiners. Here is the link for the form...http://http://www.state.nj.us/oag/ca...int/vetcom.pdf This Vet sounds way too fishy to me. How does a dog go from having gallbladder disease to "fine" in ONE day? It's almost like she was keeping your dog hostage.
