I've been to Sit Happens puppy/intermediate classes, but with our doberman. They are pretty great but I decided not to go with Lexi. We are lucky to have an off leash park within walking distance from our house, I take her there regularly, where she gets tons of socialization with all sorts of dogs.

Just be very careful not sure which off leash you are using but I found the one I went to a problem as most of the dogs that went had no manners and owners that could not control them.

Not to get way off topic, but which off leash park? I've never had a problem at any off leash park. It's true not all the dogs have manners, but this is true of any dog park - anywhere. Besides, dogs will be dogs and that is what dog parks are for.

I agree. It's extremely hard to get the timing right and you have to carry treats with you. Practice, practice, practice. I work with Loki on this constantly. Sam will bark once or twice if she sees something and he will then FREAK OUT. So with Sam as my warning I immediately look at him and say "behave! very good! " in a happy voice and keep his attention, rewarding him for not freaking out. If we are outside I ask him to sit and keep his attention. Sometimes he goes too far and will not accept the food. That means he has gone over his threshold. We try to avoid that but neighbors like to ignore my requests that they give us space. We usually cross the street. I just have to KEEP talking to him. I sound like an idiot practically singing "OH look a big dog... No big deal... let's keep walking!!" but whatever it works. He's always improving.

The one at southland and the deerfoot.... bad for dogs and coyotoes. ( cougers) You want to watch Nosehill as well for coytoes.

Actually Dog parks are not recomended by to any trainer for soicalization of a puppy let alone a dog, do to the risk of a dog getting thumped by another bad one. Risk is to high for soical skills that a dog may be made afraid or get hurt or pick up an illness.... oh but we tend to start soical skills before our shots are all given.

I love southland. While I know that Nosehill can be bad for coyotes, I've never heard anything about them at Southland.

I've heard otherwise from trainers, but regardless I have to disagree with that. Incidents may happen but overall I think it is a good way to socialize your dog and we've been taking our dogs since they were puppies.

Why I dislike retractable leashes it that in an emergency I can not get them up and away to my arms... long line I can pull it in and stand on it and have them up in seconds. yup done it. Had mine all but pulled out of my arms by a big dog.... so I no the fear. Now you are afraid and so is little man and you are making it worse for each other. As hard as it is and it hard you have to calm yourself to calm him.
Start by forgiving yourself...... yes you have quilt so did and do I. let it go you did the best you could and look still are and you kept your dogs alive. yeah well done.

Also take a break try and go out without other dogs around... I still go out after the day is quite and walk my dog in the peaceful time.
make walks fun again and less of a oh my is there going to be a dog.
Trust me that was hard for a long time for me.

Take him out on his own teach him you will protect him and that he does not have to do it,,, he got that in his head. work at the outside edge of where both you start to get worried that dog may get to close and feed him treats and tell yourself good job.

take time to heal both you and him.

I like how you put this ! I Do however, use A Retractable leash on Suzi. So far their has been no issues. I do n ot allow Suzi to go w/o A leash , so this was the best solution for the both of us. She is not, however, Agressive. She fears other dogs. that is A whole other problem altogether, but she loves people. ALL people. She is way too friendly actually ...
I like to watch the DOG Wisper, and It's Me OR the Dog, they have excellent behavior training skills with out ever using negative force, or any electrical gadgets, which IMO is cruel, and disgusting.
I do not know in Canada if their are any animal training dog shows on TV, but, I do find them very helpful.
best of luck training your Yorkie, be consistent and patient with whatever method you decide on using.

Some of you know that I am handicapped and I love MY yorkie as much as you all do but I cannot handle the pulling and yanking on my arms from an unruly dog. And the barking causing migraines. Cooper was given to me to help with my depression and loneliness and he has done that 10 fold.

Cooper is a teapot at 10 pounds so that also makes a big difference for many of you but our Vet and trainer both recommended a Pet Safe Collar for Cooper. It has the Tone correction and the static correction with a remote control so it has to be triggered by the human.

I have used it for 2 days. Yesterday I brought it home and put it on him at supper time. He began barking terribly at the paperboy. I used the Tone correction on him twice and the static on him on the #1 setting only 1 time. (The static has settings from -10) I have only had to use the tone correction since. It is very high pitched and not easy for humans to hear. But must be annoying for the dogs. I took it off him at night and did not put it on him until we went out for our walk this noon time.

I will add right here that it does NOT go off on it's own. It has a remote control and must be used by the trainer or the owner to work. So it doesn't go off by the dog barking or making noise. This is a feature I like! ALSO it can be left on the dog during the day and turned off so it can NOT be triggered by someone unauthorised or by a child or something. I take it off at night. It is not heavy on his neck and his neck is 9 inches around and it adjusts that small.

I also adjusted the static charge to the #8 on the remote and held it in my hand it did not hurt. I will say it was startling. but I have a TENS unit for my back that delivers electric shocks to your back to block pain signals and it was no worse than that. Like I said. I used # 1 on cooper and he did turn his head around and look around as if to say "what the heck was that?" but I only had to do it ONE time.

The funny thing is that Cooper knows already that the REMOTE makes the noise... So All I have to do is hold up the TV remote and say AH...AH... and he will go lay down...

I love it and it has helped me so much in just 2 days.

I hope this helps someone.

I feel it is very humane and would recommend it especially if your yorkie is on the larger size. It says right on the box for dogs 8 pounds and over, But the Vet says they do make them for TOY dogs smaller.

Hugs
Cheryl

Holy Moly, I wish I NEVER read that
By the way, I am fully Disabled too . If your unable to handle him in a manner that is not cruel, then ummmm , never mind, I am speechless.

While I agree that it is cruel ( And I do hate them) it is part and parcels of learning theroy and there sadly studies that show if used correctly that one very strong correctly timed zap can end bad behaviour really really bad aggression. The likely hood that anyone can in regular society can do it right is nil to non ( even those with great timing are still not good enough) but we have it accept that it is for sale and it is legal to use... and I can not believe I am saying this but if Ceser can use them and does then we can not ask others not to until we start with the guys that sell them and the ones that use them on TV.
we can do as you just did and go yuck cruel and rightly so but yuck cruel does not teach why cruel.
Not it not just the zap, tha over in a second. it the fact that a zap on low will leads to a zap higher and higher and habituates the dog to pain. it is the fact thay can go into shut down. it is the fact they can become more aggressive. It teaches fear of humans. it can teach fear of things around them. It is the fact taht humans can not take emotions for the most part out of training and we then use teh zap as a weapon.
It can indeed burn.
Yes zap collars are cruel but why is it important to teach.
We allow other ways to train as well that are cruel and we allow it as it alwys been done that way.
